The immigration told that I needed 2 certificates of residence of 500 bath each

Nice report.

That's a game from immigration.

When renewing car & bike (as you found out) you only need one original and photocopy.

CW has a form for the COR.

The trick is to only tick one box. eg Car license.

500baht is ridiculous, however guessing you received it on the spot.

It's 200b at CW and takes 1-2 weeks.

Some offices it's free..

Yes, received it on the spot in Kap Choeng and told them that the DLT said only need 1...  I not wanted to make problems because I need them again...  By the way at DLT I paid all together 760 bath...

My licence expires on my birthday.   Question- how long after your birthday can you go an renew?   So I can get the longer period of time on it?

Any guidance appreciated.

Sounds about right.

I opted to not renew my bike license so I paid 505b for the car only.

Funny that I handed over 550b and there was no way the officer would accept 45 baht tip.

You get at least 5 years and then until your birthday. I let it expire 1 week, get 5 years and then 51 weeks to my birthday= 5 years and 51 weeks. Your DL can be expired until 1 year, but this not give axtra validity..  I suggest you let it also expire about 1 week. If I not explain clear tell me.

Next day after your birthday.

Same as the OP , I waited till after my birthday.

My license was 2 months expired when I went to DLT to renew.

My understanding is license can be up to one year expired and can still renew.

Don't take that as definitive

Of course they would.

2 x free certificates (0baht) for 1000 baht.

Lots of beer money for them.

Udon Thani Immigration also charge ฿500 for a certificate of residence and also insist you need 2 if renewing bot car and motorbike licences.

I had already inquired at the Department of Land Transport so knew only 1 was neaded along with a photocopy.

At Surin I not made an appointment but did the E-learning at home already. Because all offices act probably not same it would be better to ask at forehand in your office..

When I got my last licence in Udon Thani did not have to wait. After the movie and eye test they usher you into a room and you sit next to the machine spitting out licences. When yours comes out they hand t to you.

Is that accurate.

So you didn't require anything from immigration.

Didn't do colour test, reaction time etc test, etc

Didn't have person take your picture, sign etc

I have a yellow house book and a pink card maybe that is the key. Not sure about the picture maybe the machine that spits out the licences also takes the picture. I got a medical but they weren't interested in it. For the previous medical I just paid the girl at the clinic and she reached under the counter took out a presigned paper and added my name.

That process certainly would not cut it at most DLT throughout Thailand.

Surprised as Udon Thani hardly the boon docks

When at the center they didn’t recognized the QR-code and say ALL foreigners must use their passport number to register at the DLT E-learning to get the right QR and have the control questions in english.

So further evidence that the yellow book / pink ID card is a complete waste of time.

I read on hear a lot of long timers seem to wear them as a badge of honour.......bizzare

Because the new driving licenses have a minimal validity of 5 years and is always valid until your birthday, I let them expire 1 week.

I didn't quite understand this part. Is it a difference if I renew the license before expiration date and after? My temporary driving license is expiring on 7th March, should I let it expire and renew after?

Once your license has expired, it has expired -- and you are supposed to renew it immediately. If you are stopped by the police with an expired license, you will be fined.

The one-year "grace period" refers to the time period during which you are allowed to renew your license without going through the entire testing rigamarole from the beginning.

To each their own.

I allowed my TDL to expire as my birthday was few days after expiry of the license.

As a result was given almost 6 years
