Facebook is rubbish at preventing scammers

Using Marketplace a friend got scammed yesterday by the seller not delivering goods, then of course seller blocks buyer so buyer can't report etc. So i report instead, Facebook didn't remove the profile, there isn't enough options to report as a scammer.

 

Reporting the ad didn't get anywhere either, no response from Facebook. Seems easy to scam people in Thailand, so the scammer will continue

It’s got nothing to do with Thailand it’s the fb world.

I received a friend request from a fb friend 2 days after he died… I reported but they didn’t shut the profile down.

I also received one from my aunt, which they also haven’t taken down.

The fb reporting system is a quagmire of bureaucracy.
 

As to your friend, just don’t pay until the item is inspected… convenient ? No.
Is it more convenient than losing your money… yes.

FaceBook simply does NOT care.

If you are tempted to buy from FaceBook Marketplace NEVER do so if the seller is not local and you cant see the goods in person before making payment.

In what world a social media market place is a safe place to conduct business and to expect no issues ate all?

There are dozens of market places over the internet and NONE of them is a 100% safe and secured

from scammers as nowadays billions are lost on scammers everywhere...

tbh, facebook is primarily a social media application, i'd be very skeptical using if for financial transactions,  especially when there are plenty of applications and web sites designed specifically for this purpose with appropriate built in checks and balances.

You need to let your friend know what he has done is wrong.

 

I'm sure no one in their right mind would send money to a vendor on Facebook without goods.

I've bought used Montblanc fountain pens from two different Thai vendors on Marketplace with no issues after up-front payments.

I did it a couple of times with no issues as have many others, I am in my right mind so perhaps on 100% of the occasions that I used it I just got lucky.

How many times have you actually bought anything using Marketplace?

Many years ago, when I tried to be a member of FB, I stopped it immediately. I would have to deliver too many personal dates.  It's like  rotten sticky pair of gloves, I don't like.

That is not buying from Marketplace, it is buying face-to-face from someone and paying cash.

Same. However too many businesses here in Krung Thep use FB instead of creating their own webpage so I'm forced to use it from time to time.

 

I deleted my real profile years ago but fortunately I have a 'fake' profile with no personal info that I use from time to time. 

 

Even that is probably leaking all my personal info from my phone to the puppet master Zuckerberg. OK, time to put on my tinfoil hat 😉

Yes, many of the most persistent scams on FB are 'Sponsored' ads, so there's no incentive for FB to remove them, as they'd lose revenue.

I met the seller on marketplace, then we completed the transaction face to face.

 

I can buy any of these items on marketplace face to face.

 

Sending money then trusting the seller who you don't know or never met to deliver is very strange behavior.
