Cruel parents dumped a poor two-year-old boy under the tree, leaving him to be mercilessly bitten by ants and mosquitoes. An old lady took care of the baby for a day and then decided to report the case of the abandoned infant to the police.

On 22 July, receiving news of the abandonment at 11.30 am., Pattaya Pol.Lt. Aniwat Thicharn, and the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team went to the incident behind Aksorn Thepprasit School, Thepprasit Road to investigate further.

At the workers’ camp of Ekmongkol Company, next to a wood, the team found a middle-aged lady worker taking care of a two year-old boy, who was crying plaintively. The baby had ant and mosquito bites all over his body, with stunted limbs, reminiscent of polio.

Mrs. Jaran Thongdul, (52), from Surin province, told the officers that she had gone out at around 6 pm to look for some vegetables in the wood, and suddenly heard a noise of a baby crying very loud. Following the plaintive sounds, she found a naked, two-year-old boy abandoned under a tree. She felt extremely sorry for the child and initially entertained the idea of adopting him. She kept the baby for a night, but she was discouraged from keeping him by her cousins, who advised her to report the matter to the police.

The officials assume that either the parents could not take care of the baby adequately as he had polio, or the mother had been left to take care of the baby alone, then decided to abandon it. Initially, officials took the baby to Banglamung Hospital to recuperate and will follow up the case and attempt to find the guilty parent or parents to charge them with child abandonment.

Tragic, but what are the alternatives?

What Social Services organisations are there that could cope. A monastery, perhaps?

The Mercy Centre perhaps a charity run organization for children or even leaving the child at a church or hospital would be better than abandoning it in a wood. These women must be desperate to do this, like the woman who abandoned her new born baby at the petol station a few weeks ago.
