UK Pensions and related information (2024)

Just in case anyone else is in the NI top-up black hole, once you have your Future Pensions forecast, you can pay any missing years without needing the dreaded 18 digit code if non-UK-resident. The information is on the website, but not obvious. I managed to pay mine today.

I've just reached this stage but have hit a bit of a snag 🤪

This morning I received my response letter, with the shortfall tables, giving a breakdown of how much I need to pay in class 2 and 3 past NICs for each year, for the past 15 years. For some years, I have to pay a mixture of class 2 and 3 due to short periods of unemployment.

I've read the site you linked to, and the corresponding one for class 2 NICs, but can't fathom how I inform them of which year or type I want to pay for.

I phoned them and discussed what I needed to do, which is how I came by this info. The guy said he could put a note on my file, but I decided to inform them officially by post detailing the payment made and allocation requirements. He said it would take about 6 months for them to process the payment.

I managed to complete the process last month...easy when you know how 🤪

The deadline has now passed but for anyone else who has made payments and still has questions, HMRC have a discussion forum where you can post questions and they will be answered by HMRC staff.

The best thing to do is trawl through previous posts because people ask the same questions over and over again:

The HMRC forums will be closed at the end of June.  Announcement at https://community.hmrc.gov.uk/

More idiotic cost cutting forcing people to use hopeless AI assistants.

I remember getting an email about that, about 2 weeks after I registered 🤪

Now the phone lines are going to be clogged up with 1000s of people all wanting an answer to the same basic question.
