Smoking in general ? or smoking weed on a boat in public ?....   in either case some people are just ignorant ayholes and don't care where their smoke blows - they are either dumb and ignorantly inconsiderate, or deliberately careless.

I've had a couple of issues in the past with ignorant cigarette smokers being completely careless....  Weed smokers seem to be a little more considerate but the smell goes a long distance.

In this case it seems and idiot was just being a careless idiot... throwing the joint into the water highlights the degree of ignorance there.

Why does throwing the joint highlight ignorance? I'm curious.

it's windy on a moving boat more than on the beach so probably that dude thought it won't bother the other passengers.

As a fellow potsmoker and foreigner, I apologize it bothered you, we usually just wanna have good times.

I always rent a hotel or Airbnb with balcony, that's where I smoke cannabis or at some dispensaries if they provide the facility.

You dont get it do you?

I feel sorry for you!

Littering so overtly....      he just threw thew joint into the water instead of putting it out and putting the remains (roach) in a bin.

....  thus, IMO... anyone littering in such an manner exposes a degree of indifference to his surroundings and those around him, this IMO is ignorant.

well, I apologized in good faith, that's on my part. I didn't ask for tolerance because I know it's wrong and against the law, I acknowledge he shouldn't smoke in public transport.

But I do see the problem here actually wasn't intentional, not all potheads have the same awareness or discipline; Anyway, I understand your anger, it will be more effective if you asked him to be fined at the moment on pier, don't forget to take some evidences because it's required by the law; that probably should satisfy you and teach him a big deal.

Who said I was angry? And you still do not get the rel problem here, which is lack of respect in public in front of families with small children!

And it is getting worse.

Smoking at public places has escalated. At ferry terminal, the beaches, at restaurants (which I did not see last year. At the bars yes, but normal restaurants no.

We come with family and kids, and nobody give a <deleted>. It is normal now, and the tourists take it for granted, this is legal, or there is no consequences due to smoking in public.

The average thais? What do they think about it? How will this impact the future regulations of legal weed in Thailand?

You mean smoking weed in public?

Well, it only became legal in 2022.

However, I have to disagree - most foreign stoners / cannabis users tend to be quite respectful and smoke only where it's permitted. Essentially, other than at cannabis cafes and dispensaries, I have yet to see any widespread flouting of the law. There ARE consequences and foreigners are likely to be fined 2000-5000 Baht if caught by the police.

I often go to tourist areas, but I don't spend my time hanging out in tourist ghettoes, which may account for my perceptions being different. For me, the most touristy places I visit are cities such as Chiang Mai, Koh Chang, Ao Nang, Krabi sometimes for a night and Khao Lak.

I guess if you're in the middle of Koh Phangan where everyone is a foreigner, it's more likely you'll stumble across some disrespectful foreigners lighting up, but generally speaking, at restaurants where smoking of anything is banned, neither Thais nor foreigners do so. They usually go outside to smoke.

Again, I emphasize that I don't hang out in Phangan, Samui, Phuket etc. I've never even been to the first two. I do visit Koh Chang on occasion and haven't seen anyone smoking weed where they're not supposed to. I occasionally pass through Pattaya on a day trip, but except for someone smoking on the street, I haven't seen any tourist "misbehaving" either. Don't know about bars, but might happen at some of the girlie bars. Not my kind of scene so I can't comment as I'm not a sexpat.

Smoking tobacco as well weed have escalated since weed became legal from medical purposes. It have never become legal to smoke in public, and based on the feedback and reactions here, it seems many on the forum being triggered by just basic common sense.

I do not mind if it becomes illegal again, and police also follow up smoking at public places as they promised 8 years back. It is up to the users of weed to preserve the rights they have for now, not me, but indeed they fail so.

To all of you towers, it is not me you hurting, it is your freedom to buy legal pot everywhere in Thailand without risk to be prosecuted.

not wrong at all , I reckon it was purely a rhetorical question the purpose of which was purely to express righteous indignation at the behaviour of others.   Not unexpected really considering  the current media frenzy /crackdown on foreigners. Its quite contagious,  There are a few on here who mistakenly  believe that criticising foreigners sets them above all others and elevates their status with the Thais, so its basically a mixture of virtue signalling, whilst at the same time appeasing the ever present lynch mob.  I'm just surprised there was no call for blacklisting or deportation

His fictional concern for the other Thai family was truly heart rending and more than a little nauseating

I'm starting to think it was a totally imaginary scenario

Seems we had this discussion before. We'll, what happens now? See,

No consequences no emphasis or no understanding, nothing learned.

When actions lack consequences, emphasis, or lead to a lack of understanding, learning is severely impaired. Without experiencing the effects of actions, individuals may not grasp the connection between their behavior and outcomes, hindering the development of appropriate behavior patterns and problem-solving skills. This can lead to a cycle of repeating mistakes and a failure to adapt and improve.

The OP asked the offender "to politely not smoke in public".

Strangely he did not ask the offender his primary question...

The OP was in the best position to ask the "foreign tourist" why they think they're allowed to smoke in public.

Asking here seems, well, weird.

Am I wrong in wondering why the OP posed a question?

Wrong's not the word.
