Yesterday, a boxing match took the term fighting spirit too literally when the referee’s decision to declare the match a draw led to an uproar. What was supposed to be a celebration of skill and sportsmanship quickly descended into mayhem as one individual, dissatisfied with the draw, physically attacked the referee on stage.

 

The altercation didn’t end there. The enraged party also assaulted the opposing corner, causing a commotion that has since gone viral. A social media page, which focuses on bringing such moments to light, shared the clip alongside a message condemning the use of violence and suggesting that such decisions should be reviewed through proper channels to avoid tarnishing the sport’s image. Witnesses at the scene expressed confusion and disbelief at the turn of events.

“I was there, but I couldn’t understand why they were hitting the referee,”

 

The sentiment in the stadium was clear: the referee’s decision was not only unexpected but seen as outright wrong by many, including the bettors who had already paid out based on a different outcome.

 

A comment from the crowd revealed a consensus that the referee’s call was influenced by personal interests, with allegations hinting at corruption. One comment read that the match in the clip is a classic example of how problems are caused entirely by the officials. Everyone in the stadium agreed that the referee deserved what he got.

 

In the heat of the moment, emotions ran high, and the sense of injustice over the perceived unfair refereeing decision was palpable. This sentiment was echoed by another spectator.

How can you pay out on an outcome that has been officiated yet, if not for some sort of pre-arranged fixing?

boxing is inherently a violent sport and I stopped watching it a long time ago.

I recall the ring being surrounded by barbed wire in an upcountry boxing match. Fun thing, they were 5 round fights and half  had one guy beating the stuffings out of the other for 4 rounds. Then getting knocked out in fifth. Four rounds to lock in the bets and then bingo, 5th round payout. Good thing they had heavy barbed wire up! The crowd was drunk & riled. 😆

Yes indeed, and not just Thai Boxing. Sadly it is a worldwide problem in many different sports, as I know very well.

For over 25 years I was a qualified football (soccer) referee registered with the English Football Association. Although never physically abused, other than being spat at and a few pushes, the verbal and mental abuse was at times horrendous eg. phone calls to my house and scathing media reports, not about my ability to referee but the result of the game and blaming me - just as above with the Thai boxing referee. I could go on at length, but I will end with one incident where myself and my 2 assistant referees (linesmen in those days) had an armed police escort off the pitch after an U-18 International Youth Match between a Brazilian team and a Ugandan team. At the final whistle, the Brazilian team lost and all hell let loose with people running onto the pitch from all directions. Fortunately Brazilian Police Officers were on site and they escorted us back to the dressing room and eventually into our minibus. The spectators anger, I did not keep adding on extra time for the Brazillians to score!!!
