Ex-deputy PM criticises senators’ planned European study trips as terms end

Former deputy prime minister Plodprasop Suraswadi has criticised a large group of senators who are planning overseas study trips before the end of their terms in office and has urged them to cancel their plans for “the sake of their dignity”.

 

In his Facebook post today, Plodprasop said that the European study trips, planned by several Senate committees, whose terms in office are due to end on May 10th, have come under heavy public criticism because the trips will cost an estimated 81 million baht of taxpayers’ money.

 

In justifying the study trips, the Senate committees claim that they have not been abroad for a few years, thanks to the COVID pandemic and, therefore, have saved the budget earmarked for overseas trips for Senate committees.

I remember this guy, former Science Minister, he had this idea to push floodwaters with a thousand boats down the river in 2011. Maybe inspired from an overseas trip...

Just imagine the ideas a bunch of Senators come back with from Europe, he knows it won't end well.

I would think saved some of the money saved with a big chunk of it finding it's way into pockets, however, the whole idea of saving the budget money aka taxpayer's money, is extremely distasteful at best.

They should threaten to pass a retroactive law for when this Senate is dissolved, threatening to recoup the cost of the trips.

I recall a previous 'event' when the whole electoral commission went on a European study trip, they departed Thailand the first day of the voting of an election.

 

Before they left much complaint, the complaint I recall was:

 

- Wives / spouses unhappy because only one day for shopping on the official agenda, for each of the cities included in the trip.

Most ministries here arrange for end-of-budget period overseas studies trips. I remember when one group planned to visit London (especially Harrods) by requesting the UK Department of Education issue an official invitation (which is required for the trip to be approved.

 

The Department was accustomed to these requests and decided "enough is enough." Request denied.
