Register Thai marraige in UK

Is there any benefit to doing this?

 

I have a couple of bank accounts in uk but no property, should i make a will in UK ( i have one here with all Thai accounts and assets ). Would it be easier for wifey to get the UK assets with the marriage registered there?

 

Been married for 20 years here, wife giving me OBE whilst sleeping very unlikely.

 

Any input appreciated.

You can not register a Thai marriage in the UK, a Thai marriage certificate/translation is accepted by the UK.

A translation of the Thai marriage certificate in to english, minimal cost in Thailand, if you have UK assets then i would get a UK will, you will need executer to carry out your wishes

Ok, so then where does this translation of Thai certificate need to get presented in uk, or it's just filed along with UK will?

You would need to speak to a lawyer, as to what is required, they might want to see the original marriage certificate and official translation, not sure they would accept copies, but will make life easy for your wife if all is done correctly now, hopefully someone who has done it will come up with the answer

Also if you pass away in Thailand they are going to want death certificate/translation, if it goes to probate you need someone/ firm to do it, guess all depends on how much your assets are worth against the cost, of a UK lawyer dealing with it

Money only and no property.

If not wanting to leave funds to anyone in UK best option is to transfer funds to Thailand. 

Surely not referring to serious money as it's in a bank.

I don't want to send the funds to thailand as they're getting 5.5% interest in the uk which returns me approx 1m per year.

It's nothing to do with the banks, you're suppose to declare it, which i  don't.

To get a interest bearing account, doesn't the bank require your UK tax id? Do banks automatically send all the information on interest earned to your UK government like they do in Canada? 

 

If the system is different I may as well open a UK bank account.

The bank requires nothing from me.

 

In theory i'm tax domicile, not a uk resident but holding a uk address.

I think you need to get some very specialist advice.  Getting £1,000,000 per annum interest equates to capital over £18,000,000. 

 

If that is really the case of course!!

Proper legal marriage in Thailand is recognised by the UK.

There is no requirement as I understand it to register it with the UK government.

I have registered my legal Thai marriage with my company pension provider because my wife is entitled to 50% of it per month when I die.

This is also included in my Thai will along with my UK bank accounts.

You need to be a little careful on the wording. There was a time when you could deposit the marriage certificate with the General Registry Office(GRO) through the British  Embassy in Bangkok. I did it in 2008.

I should point out it was a deposit rather than a registration, as you say the UK will recognise a legal marriage in Thailand.

I think the embassy stopped handling GRO deposits in 2012 but not sure if you can still deal with the GRO direct.

In reality not a great deal to be gained but you did get an annotated copy of the deposit with the GRO seal which over the years has been very useful in visa applications for my wife.

From 1 January 2014, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has discontinued its service of depositing foreign marriage and civil partnership certificates with General Register Offices in the UK.
