Couple in Bangkok arrested for illegal online ammunition sales

The Thai police have arrested a couple for selling bullets online, as part of a major effort to stop illegal arms trading.

The couple, Sarawut, 29, and 19-year old Nariporn, were caught selling ammunition on an e-commerce site. They had hidden their illegal business by pretending to sell film cameras, but were really selling .22LR ammunition.

The arrests were made by the cyber patrol unit of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police, after a careful investigation. The police are trying to stop crimes that upset the public, such as drug trafficking and illegal arms dealing. These crimes often cause violence and other criminal activities.

Sarawut, who works for the Department of Provincial Administration in Kanchanaburi, admitted he bought .22LR ammunition cheaply using his official ID card. He first sold the ammunition to people he knew, then got Nariporn to help him sell it online. They sold more than 200 boxes, around 1,000 rounds in total.

The police hope the couple's arrest will warn others against selling firearms and ammunition without the right permits. Those who break this law can be jailed for two to 20 years and fined between 4,000 and 40,000 baht (US$107 to US$1,075).

People who buy firearms or ammunition online without the right permission can be jailed for one to 10 years and fined 2,000 to 20,000 baht (US$53 to US$240). This is as per the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, Fireworks, and the Equivalent of Firearms Act. Such legal breaches also result in long-lasting criminal records, showing the risks of illegal arms trading.

Who would buy .22LR ammunition, anyway?

LR designates Long Rifle

And, what would you do with this type of ammunition?

If you are a young kid, then maybe target practice?

Still, one should not underestimate the LR, because it is not like shooting a cap pistol.

The LR can travel quite far, in fact.

Always wise to check your backstop before engaging in target practice.

Note:  I still don't know who in their right mind would buy ammunition like this in Thailand.

Can also be used in hand gun...and yes, small but dangerous, as usually don't stop till they hit something.

People with a .22LR rifle ?

There IS NO .22LR rifle!

There are just .22 caliber rifles and .22 caliber pistols and revolvers.

In these guns, rifles and pistols and revolvers, one can choose to use the rimfire ammunition, as follows:

.22 short

.22 LR

and a few others.

Also, there is a .22 magnum (but, some rifles will not accept these, I think. When I was young, I found a few on the range, and they would not fit my rifle.)

You can see what these look like...here...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.22_caliber#:~:text=.22 Long Rifle Extra Long, powerful than the .22 LR

They are good for target practice.

And, maybe good for rabbits, too.

But, I would never buy these.

I prefer the 0.460 Magnums, myself.

====

I have never seen a .22 centerfire, up close and personal, but I guess they must exist somewhere.  Maybe NATO, or something?

My glock 44 uses .22 LR ammo.

for some longer distance plinking a B-14R would be the go, uses .22LR ammo as well.

. 22LR  means .22 calibre Long Rifle

You can also get a shorter round of the. 22 calibre. The actual bullet (head) can be the same length but the casing is shorter. And smaller bullet is also avaliable.

Many years ago, we tried legislation to ban home made guns, Saturday Night Specials, etc.

They are not for collectors or hunters, or protection by homeowners, etc....

(Which reminds me:  I have to make an emergency appointment with my dentist. I have a fractured tooth, etc.)

Good for target practice at the range.

Low recoil, etc.
