It's hardly been any time since the invasion, so why anyone considers the situation to remain the way it is are too hasty, IMO.

So, the Russian counter-attack is coming Real Soon Now.

Even if they retreated, they would have already led Russia to waste significant resources.

And some of these resources would need to be permanently used by Russia in border regions in order to avoid another humiliating invasion. 

Russia won't care about the sparse Russians in the border regions they are collateral damage. Never forget they burned down Moscow to prevent Napoleon taking it. There is evidence that UKR is digging in and intend to stay and if they do and are indeed as articles abpve have said the best troops they will suffer merciless FAB bombs raining down on their positions. Putin doesn't care about the optcis just the outcome.
