Fortunately, the (USA) card issuers in both instances detected the fraud, declined the charges and prompted me to secure my accounts.

Someone attempted to use both cards for the same online purchase in the UAE. There was also an attempt to use one of the cards for a PayPal transaction (in Euros.)

Now, mind you, I realize this doesn't prove anything, but here are the only things the two cards had in common:

Both were saved payment methods on Lazada and Tops Online. Additionally, one of the cards was a saved payment method on Food Panda (I twice attempted to use the other card to make a purchase on FP, but it was declined for reasons unknown.)

Make of all this what you will, but be careful: the bad guys are getting cleverer by the day.

out of those i would guess food panda, but I don't save my credit card details online including Lazada, easy enough to type in each time. Eventually they will be hacked

I still don't understand why people who live here use and carry around a foreign credit card.

Because it saves me money, i.e., fees for transferring funds from US to Thai bank account.

Lazada, Shopee etc...only COD. Payment on delivery and absolutely no credit card details on line.

Never, never purchase online with credit card details in Thailand. Not even due to the card fraud, mais mainly with all the racket on the quality of goods, parcel thefts that can never arrive. Only pay on arrival COD and you have the option to refuse if the packet is damaged or looks tampered.

Never...never use your credit card in Thailand as even the restaurants here have crooks who skim cards.

Always us use cash when you come to Thailand. Not practical to carry around bundles of notes I agree. But it's the price to pay for full safety.

I will only bring in cash when I come as even the transfers from abroad to thai banks are becomming a nuisance.

Currency Fair takes ages to acknowledge your money is received via bank transfer in Europe and then it takes almost 3 to 7+ days for the money to arrive at Kasikorn Bank. Of course every one will say it's the other one's fault.

Of course there will always be the smart drunk comming and claiming he or she never had an issue. Ignore. Do thing the safest way.

I have a UK visa card and they refuse to send renewals to Thailand due to its reputation for fraud. I have a UK address (my sister's) that it goes to. Go Thailand!

I have only Thai credit cards and I get SMS when they are used (I think if the amount is over 1000B).

I don't get too many SMS so it's not a big problem to look at my phone when one of those arrives.

Until now I didn't have any misuse on any of the cards.

I hate any online storage of payment methods/details.

From time to time I search through my accounts to clean up (that includes Google).

And I use foreign credit card online only when unavoidable.

Domestic stuff all with domestic debit cards or QR code payment.

I still don't understand why people who live here use and carry around a foreign credit card.

In 12 years only had my German credit card locked once.

I have only a vague idea why: ordered stuff at a US online store, paying in Thai Baht with the German (EUR) card. Maybe this triggered some alarm.
Although the purchase went fine?

I sign up for the cards and have them sent to a relatives’ address in my passport country. She takes photos of them and I load them into Apple Pay so I can use them for contactless payments.

Then I get the signup bonus in the form of airlines miles so that when I travel I can fly in business class for free.

I had a similar problem twice over the past 4 years - once shortly after I ordered some books from a Thai on-line bookstore (which I used for the first time) and the second time shortly after I ordered about half a dozen computer components for different supplies via Lazard.  In both cases the fraud was only a few thousand Baht.  I  contacted my overseas bank and promptly cancelled the cards and received replacement cards.

I’ve used my Apple credit card in Thailand online at the Thailand Apple Store without a problem.  Depending on the amount of the transaction, I sometimes have to specifically authorize the charge after an initial decline, so I guess if I do that from my phone or other authorized device, they think it’s ok and the charge goes through the second time.  I’ve also used my Apple Wallet with the Apple Card as the default payment method at the grocery store at Central Festival. Those transactions always go through. You need facial recognition to open the phone. Supposedly, that method of payment is very very secure because of the NFC chip.  One of these days, I’m going to try using my Apple Watch.  That always works the same way, at least in the U.S.

As for using a physical card?  I’ve tried that once recently to buy an IPad, again using the Apple Card, which only has my name on it. No account numbers, just the NFC chip inside. No problem so far.

On the other hand, I’m not sure I’d trust a regular credit card.  Years ago, I used an American Express card for a few purchases, but I no longer trust regular credit cards.

One time when I was in the U.S., I bought something online from Canada. Within 15 minutes, someone down in Miami Beach was buying expensive sunglasses and purses with my account.  A few minutes after that, I got a call from the card company. They wanted to know if the charges were mine and I said no.  They reversed the charges, closed that account, and sent me a new card with a different number.

Anyway, I usually just use cash in Thailand.
