Man fulfills vow by offering 99 pig heads at a temple in Nakhon Pathom

A young worker, his wife, and child visited the famous Klang Bang Phra temple in Nakhon Pathom to fulfill a promise he had made to a highly venerated Buddhist statue, the Luang Por Somwang. This was marked by an offering of 99 pig heads, 100 boiled eggs, and nine different kinds of fruits.

 

The Klang Bang Phra temple, home of the Luang Por Somwang statue, is a spiritual hub for locals and worshippers from across the country. This revered Buddha statue, standing at more than 30 meters high, was the center of activities yesterday morning from 9 am where devotees gathered to pay their respects.

 

Among the worshippers was Wat, a resident of Bangkok. He and his family made a large offering as a fulfillment of a promise Wat had made to Luang Por Somwang. The offering, presented neatly in front of the statue, included 99 pig heads, 100 boiled eggs, and nine types of fruits like pomelo, pineapple, coconut, pear, dragon fruit, apple, grapes, and bananas.

 

Wat, an employee in a private company, narrated his life from four years ago when he was still single. During a visit to the Klang Bang Phra temple, he prayed to Luang Por Somwang, wishing for a wife and children. He participated in a prayer ritual that involved the application of gold leaf to the statue's right hand. His frequent prayers were sentiments of success in his career, financial stability, and good luck.

 

A year after his prayers, he met his future wife and they got married and had a child. In thanksgiving, he returned to the temple with his family to fulfill his promise by offering what he had committed. Wat attributed his career, financial stability, good luck, and a loving family to his faith in Luang Por Somwang.

 

After giving their offerings, Wat and his family participated in a ritual that involved lighting firecrackers, revealing the numbers 507 and 23. Their offerings will be used for the temple's charitable activities such as aid for bedridden patients, disabled individuals, the elderly, low-income families, and victims of disasters.

For a religion that advocates, as I understand it, not harming living creatures, this offering of pigs heads, chickens etc. at temples seems to go against all principles. Never understood it and never get a proper answer when I ask practising 'Buddhists' why dead animal sacrifices are made.

I suppose if you go for the full Thai Buddhist Monty then a sacrificed animal earns merit for the sacrifice and comes back as something better. So you actually do it a favor. Who knows?

you do realise that the pigs were not decapitated specifically for this event?   Pigs heads are easily  available and can even be bought at makro. Most religions have rituals that involve strange acts, the origins of which have been long forgotten, most followers of those religions have little knowledge  or indeed little interest as to why they do these things

 Perhaps you're right; I don't profess to be an expert.  All I know is that all the Thai "Buddhists" I know eat inordinate amounts of meat.  Perhaps they're not real Buddhists?

Of course they eat meat. Go to any supermarket, fresh market or even 7/11 and you will find fresh or processed meat  for sale every day. I am sure that there are not enough farangs in Thailand to eat all the meat consumed every day in Thailand.

 

It is up to each individual to decide what they eat, not you to spread religious mumbo jumbo about what people should or should not eat.
