Thai Travelers Demand Quality Over Low-Cost Tours

Despite the allure of cheaper travel packages, Thai outbound travellers are continuing to opt for quality over cost, changing the face of international travel from Thailand. The trend emerges amid a crackdown on cost-cutting practices that often compromise the travel experience.

 

The Thai tourism sector, especially for outbound travels, has been relatively insulated from the price wars often seen in popular destinations like South Korea, Macau, and Italy.

 

According to the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) Vice-President, Chotechuang Soorangura, the impact of cheap packages has decreased as more Thais are opting for higher-quality travel options.

 

The shift comes even as the global economic pressure has pushed the cost of travel up by at least 30% since before the pandemic.

 

Historically, these inexpensive tour packages often came with conditions, such as compulsory purchases at specific stores, which would catch travellers off guard.

 

The TTAA noted that while such practices are less prevalent today, they haven't been eradicated. Chotechuang highlighted that initially, many tourists unknowingly fell into these traps, lured by the low prices. However, the scenario has evolved significantly post-pandemic.

 

Nowadays, even budget tour packages attempt to enhance their appeal and reputation by improving the quality of their compulsory shopping offerings.

 

For example, in Taiwan, stores selling traditional pineapple cakes have transformed their sales strategy. They now offer museum-like experiences that engage tourists with the history and culture behind the product, thus adding value to what was once a mere shopping stop.

 

TTAA also points out the shift in consumer behaviour saying Thai travellers are becoming increasingly discerning, prioritizing the credibility and reliability of tour operators over mere cost savings.

 

Kriangphon Piyaekchai, another Vice-President of TTAA, underscored the organisation's commitment to education and monitoring. He revealed that over a thousand member agencies are on the watch, ensuring that travellers are not misled by deceptive pricing strategies.

 

These developments signal a maturing travel culture among Thais, who now value quality and transparency more than ever, steering clear of the pitfalls of cheaper travel deals that compromise their travel experience.

So, the Thais getting a little fussy. Maybe they should clean up their own back yard first & make sure their own finances or sustainable if they want to keep traveling.

As well they should be fussy, if I was on a tour (which I would never be on to begin with) and they told me that I must purchase something from this store, I can't even imagine what my reaction would be, but it wouldn't be very dignified, I would not be cooperative in the slightest, and I would probably be banned from ever taking a tour again, which would be fine by me. 

 

And I would likely go out of my way to discourage other people on the tour from patronizing that shop. Enemy #1! He is not cooperative. He is not a lemming. LOL.

a taxi ride in phuket is 2000+ baht , and cost way more than it should and can cost in bangkok...

Everything in Phuket costs way more than it should from what I have observed, however I think that is only noticed if you live here and are able to compare with other places

For people visiting from Europe etc it is still probably considered far cheaper than what they would pay at home.

Hypocrisy at its best !!! If any country takes the prize for being the top rip off country it’s Thailand.  From the «  solly , Palace closed today »  to the jewelry shops, traditional art , rip off tuc tuc prices,  fake watches and anything else fake T shirts, running shoes  and  even fake meds !!! Then there are fake girls, and fake boys. Enough to make the tourist head spin !

I wonder if when they arrive in London(for instance) the girls will be telling the guys that they must have lots of money because they can afford to fly there?

 

Or if they will be charged at least twice as much as "Brits" to get into London Zoo?

Obviously this would not go over well.  Being forced to buy products at a store not of my choosing?  Not bloody likely!

What about giving quality service and reduce visa and tax hassles for foreigners in Thailand ?

For you well off expats, try remember that Thais also rip off other Thais, and most of them do not have your

size of incomes.  I am lucky that my Thai relatives mostly have good jobs, or work long hours at a small market to

feed them selves and they all have either small houses, town hiomes, or mya oldest brother in law, has rented a

town house apartment for years.  I only have 4 rich Thai relatives, that make almost as much money

as the bulk of yur expat posters that can afford to live in Thailand year round.  Food for thought.
