I am confused because in the past i had taken the train from Vientiane to Bangkok. Had that service stopped for awhile and this is new?

You had to change trains in Nong Khai.

The journey began at Nong Khai Railway Station and concluded at Vientiane Station (Khamsavath) in Laos.

So a 15min ride, been there done that 8 years ago. Let me know when it goes all the way to Vientiane and beyond.
