Hi -when my gf applied for a visa to come with me on holiday to the US I got a noterized I-134 Affidavit of Support. She ended up getting a multiple entry 10 year visa but I suspect that was mostly because her son has a US passport. However we gave them everything possible including the I-134 to be safe and everything worked out OK.

Her cousin is going to go visit my mom for a week in September. We have all the letters from everyone, tickets. letters from her employeer, etc. etc. I don't like to take chances and wonder if the I-134 helps at all? It really is a form for immigrant visa but does show a williness to take total financial responsibility.

It's not filling out the form that is the issue it's the hassle of going to the US Embassy to have it noterized. Should I bother? Does it make a difference?

A college friend of my wife visited last year on a tourist visa. We didn't bother with an affadavit of support, and there was no problem. The problem seems to happen when there is reason to suspect she may not return; ie for a woman trying to get a tourist visa to visit a boyfriend in the US, the required evidence will be much higher than for someone just going to visit a friend or relative.

Also, it sounds like you're not living in the US right now (since you would have to go to the embassy). In that case, I'm not sure if you can file an affadavit of support for her, since you wouldn't be here to support her.

I don't the I-134 is helpful for a tourist visa. The US does not recognize any sort of "Sponsorship" for tourist visas. The sole determining criteria is will the person return.

My Thai gf (now my wife as we married in the US) had no problems with her tourist visa at US Embassy in BKK. In fact, we had lots of docs ready for review, but they never asked, especially after they found out she owns a home in BKK and has a good job. Good reasons why she will likely return to Thailand.

She received a 10 year multiple entry. It was a breeze.
