A caravan of approximately 3,000 migrants began their journey towards the US southern border on Sunday. With the upcoming November election and the potential for Donald Trump to regain the presidency, many in the group expressed their desire to seek asylum before any possible changes to border policies.

The group, comprising individuals from various Latin American countries, set out from Mexico’s southern border. They hope to reach the US before Trump could potentially implement stricter border measures if elected. Miguel Salazar, a migrant from El Salvador, voiced his concerns about the risk of blocked entry permits. He feared that a new Trump administration might stop asylum-seekers from booking appointments through the CBP One app. This app allows migrants to schedule legal entry appointments at border posts once they reach Mexico City or northern Mexican states. Salazar, 37, noted, “Everyone wants to use that route.”

Oswaldo Reyna, a 55-year-old Cuban migrant, criticized Trump’s rhetoric, particularly his claims that migrants are attempting to “invade” the US. Reyna stated, “We are not delinquents. We are hard-working people who have left our country to get ahead in life, because in our homeland we are suffering from many needs.”

Both Trump and his vice-presidential pick, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, have pledged to tighten migrant crossings if they win the election. However, uncertainty remains over who Trump will face in this pivotal election after President Biden announced he would not seek reelection. Instead, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, though she must still secure her party’s nomination.

The Biden administration, including Harris, has faced significant criticism over border policies that critics argue have allowed a record number of migrants into the US. The caravan began its trek from Ciudad Hidalgo, a Mexican town bordering Guatemala. Many migrants had been waiting there for weeks, hoping to obtain permits to continue their journey north.

They will be classified as undocumented migrants until election day, then they'll be reclassified as illegal aliens.

Doublespeak. :coffee1:

But there is a legal way, and not all coming here are honorable.

I am 100% for increasing the legal path. But we need to know who they are.

Trump built a wall the Mexicans didn’t pay for with gaps everywhere.

The immigrants just walk to the gaps and walk right in.

You figure Biden selling off the materials to fill the gaps, at scrap prices, was a good idea?

So Trump’s client Media, The New York Post haven’t thought this through.

Either these immigrants don’t believe Trump will lock them up in camps and then deport them en masse, or don’t believe Trump will win the election.

In this respect the immigrants are showing signs of clearer analysis of Trump’s lies and prospects than his supporters.

That is the problem. Too many think the US owes them an opportunity to get ahead even if they become criminals by illegally entering a foreign country.

If they used the money they gave to criminal gangs to get to the border at home they might have been able to get ahead in life anyway.

and the reason the gaps exist is because Biden stopped the wall being completed. Is that an inconvenient truth?

Someone is telling us a load of lies about this situation. All those illegal migrants come from other countries, many up the Darien Gap. I've seen many tv documentaries saying that criminal gangs prey on them and steal their money. So, if they lost all their money on travel and bribes to get to the Mexican border, how can they afford to get from southern Mexico to the US border? If they walk all that way, they must need new shoes at least.

Did you ever consider the possibility that not all of them, or even most of them, suffer that unhappy fate?

What you and others have missed in this article is that these immigrants have a long way to go before they reach the border. And the government of Mexico is not exactly willing to see them succeed

Mexico is stopping nearly three times as many migrants now, helping keep U.S. border crossings down
Biden administration officials say the increased help from Mexico in slowing migration is proof their relationship with Mexico is more productive than Trump's approach.
