Biden Speech From Oval Office Withdrew from Reelection to Unite Democrats

In a historic address from the Oval Office, President Joe Biden announced his decision to end his bid for reelection. He emphasized that his choice was driven by a need to unite the Democratic Party amidst weeks of internal turmoil and increasing pressure to step aside. Biden stated that while he had once believed nothing short of a higher power could sway his decision to run again, he ultimately concluded that uniting his party was of paramount importance.

"In recent weeks it has become clear to me that I need to unite my party in this critical endeavor," Biden said. "Nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition. So, I decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. It’s the best way to unite our nation."

Standing by his side were First Lady Jill Biden, his children, their spouses and children, some of his longtime political advisers, and White House staff. Biden's decision followed intense discussions with congressional leaders who expressed concerns that his continued candidacy could jeopardize Democratic control of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming elections.

Biden has thrown his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, who many Democrats believe has revitalized the party's energy and could improve their chances of defeating former President Donald Trump. Harris watched Biden’s speech from Houston, Texas, reflecting her active engagement in the campaign.

In a letter posted to social media, Biden formally announced his withdrawal, acknowledging the efforts of prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to persuade him to step aside. “There is a time and a place for long years of experience in public life,” Biden said in his address. “There’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices. Yes, younger voices. And that time is now.”

Biden's decision came after a poor debate performance in late June, where his struggles to articulate his thoughts raised concerns about his viability as a candidate. Despite initial resistance, Biden recognized the broader necessity of his withdrawal for the party's unity and future success.

In his address, Biden made a fervent plea for the preservation of democracy, a central theme throughout his administration. "In this moment, we can see those we disagree with not as enemies but as friends, fellow Americans. Can we do that? Does character in public life still matter?" he asked.

He referenced a quote from Benjamin Franklin that he keeps in his office: "a Republic, if you can keep it." He continued, "Whether we keep our Republic is now in your hands. History is in your hands, the power’s in your hands. The idea of America lies in your hands."

Biden clarified that he would complete his current term, which ends in January, and outlined his priorities for the remaining months. These include efforts to end the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Supreme Court reform, continuing to advocate for reproductive rights, and his Cancer Moonshot initiative. He also praised Harris, calling her “experienced,” “tough,” and “capable.”

Reflecting on his long career, Biden expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve. "Nowhere else on Earth can a kid with a stutter from modest beginnings in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware, one day sit behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office," he said. "I’ve given my heart and my soul to the nation, like so many others … I hope you have some idea how grateful I am, to all of you."

Dem party democracy, elites rule !

Biden allies say 'elites' are disenfranchising voters who want the president to stay in.

Members of the party's base, particularly Black and Latino voters, are warning that efforts to push Biden out of the 2024 race are undemocratic.

This is the sad part about our two party system & its cheerleaders

It is never about the achievements instead no matter what or who it is about the party.

Look at when this nice old man was being paraded about even when it was obvious he was flailing mentally.

Instead of folks around him nicely stating the facts the true blue always made excuses

Even now he has finally (probably) been forced aside & the same true blue that cheered him while he flailed will now cheer & vote for a totally unqualified person (Kamala Harris ) to become President of the USA

Thus is the idiocy of this two party system. As if it were a tag team wrestling match. These cheerleaders (for either side) would rather cut their noses off to spite their faces. Never really truly caring about their country

The party of democracy , feckless attempt to control power!

“Not the press, not the pundits, not the big donors, not any selected group of individuals, no matter how well intentioned. The voters — and the voters alone — decide the nominee of the Democratic Party.”

What a difference a week makes when democracy elites in the dem party panic! They’re still got their convention

to twist their radical democratic policies!

"The president has made it clear he wants to continue to run, and I think people are being very respectful of that," said Simon Rosenberg, a Democratic strategist.

I still haven't seen him.

All I have is a tweet to drop out of the race and a dodgy voice recording. During that recording Harris said "It's great to have you on the reco.... uh the call". 😄

Have they got him tied up in the basement somewhere? Come out, Come out wherever you are - Joe.

Can someone remind him he is still President?

One of bidens radical socialist supporters recently said about the undemocratic pressure campaign to oust biden:

“If you think that there is consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to leave that they will support Vice President Harris, you would be mistaken,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “They’re not going to be fully honest, but I’m going to be honest for them.”

IMO the statement "saving our democracy" is a lie. IMO only those that believe Democrat propaganda think American democracy is in jeopardy.

What's undemocratic is trying to remove the opponent by misusing the judicial system.

Anyway, Biden was obviously reading the speech, so it was whatever his handlers wrote.

I watched the speech and he looked very strange, as though he had been drugged or something. His head never moved and he wasn't looking at the camera.

BTW, he told a huge lie that I heard- apparently he appointed the first black woman to SCOTUS.

Even though he was obviously reading the speech he still got confused in parts, and said IMO nonsensical things. No doubt the speech is going to be analysed in depth and those lapses exposed.

I think AOC is right, but there is no choice at this point. So the party will be united behind Harris.

AOC has endorsed Kamala Harris for president. She is with the party decision to unite against the country to defeat DT's threat to American democracy. Do keep up.

Unfortunately you are not correct. Harris was not democratically elected. She didn't win any primaries and far as I know there is but one vote for both president and VP.

At no point has she been democratically chosen by voters to be the POTUS candidate.

LOL. It's hardly united behind her. That is like saying every GOP congressperson supports Trump.

So your comment has no bearing on my post.

Correct, but when did the Democrats ever care about Democracy?

We've seen lawfare, violence, assassination attempts, vitriol.

Not much in the way of Democracy though from the Dems though. The way Biden was removed from the race was more like a coup.

Nah bro dont swing that way.

Why did you post he has not been seen when he was addressing the nation?

A very odd thing to say in a thread discussing President Biden’s televised speech.

But it it’s at least puts the all your other comments in this thread into their correct context, uninformed off topic nonsense.

This question has been going around the Republican camp that voters have been disenfranchised by this switch. No they are wrong. Voters in the primary cast ballots for delegates to the convention who were pledged to Biden but who are now 'unbound'by Biden withdrawal That will allow them to vote for another person at the DNC. Fully within the law. The SC has held that political parties control the nominating process, and they are entitled to manage how they arrive at a nominee. So far 2,688 Democratic delegates have moved swiftly to say that they will vote Harris at the DNC. She only need 1,976 delegates on the first ballot to secure the Democratic nomination. It will be a young intelligent Harris versus a very old cogntive challenged Trump.
