Two Thai Nationals Apprehended in Malaysia Over Fuel Smuggling

Malaysian law enforcement authorities have detained two Thai individuals, a man and a woman, for allegedly attempting to smuggle cheap fuel into Thailand. The smuggling operation involved using Malaysia-registered vehicles.

The suspects were temporarily stopped at a checkpoint in Kota Putra, a district in Malaysia's Kedah state, on Saturday. According to a report by the official Malaysian news agency, Bernama, the checkpoint was primarily designed for inspecting vehicles bound for the Thai-Malaysian border crossing.

Officers from Kedah's Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry arrested the duo before subsequently handing them over to the Malaysian police for further investigation. The suspects' names are yet to be released, however, their ages were stated; the man is 21 years old and the woman is 39, as confirmed by the ministry.

Commenting on the issue on Sunday, the Director of the Kedah office of the ministry, Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin, revealed the findings. "In examining the two Proton Wira vehicles, we found modified tanks holding 130 litres of suspected petrol each," he explained.

Lower fuel prices in Malaysia compared to Thailand incentivize smugglers to buy at cheaper rates from Malaysian petrol stations and then illicitly sell the fuel on Thai territory.

Despite warnings from Malaysian law enforcement agencies about intensifying operations to crack down on fuel trafficking, this recent apprehension suggests persistent smuggling activities.

The state of Kedah shares a border with Thailand's Songkhla province.
