Bangkok’s iconic port, a significant hub for Thailand’s water transport, is about to undergo a dazzling transformation. The Thai Transport Ministry has unveiled an ambitious plan to turn parts of the port into a vibrant entertainment complex. However, the project hinges on clearer government regulations before it can fully commence.

At a recent media briefing, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri emphasised that Bangkok Port will remain operational. “We have no plans to relocate the port. The focus is on improving it,” she stated.

The 928-acre site, vital for cargo and logistics, will see developments under the Smart Port Development Plan. Unused areas will be repurposed for housing and commercial use, while preserving the port's essential operations. This plan includes mixed-use commercial spaces, efficient transhipment systems, and potentially even a stadium.

"The Port of Bangkok is a key element in this project, but it won’t dominate the entire area. We aim for a balanced development,” Charoensri added.

Nevertheless, the green light for the project is not imminent. Clarity in policy is necessary, prompting relevant agencies to convene for discussions. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is expected to form a committee to scrutinise the plans thoroughly.

This transformation promises to bolster Bangkok’s status as a bustling metropole while preserving its crucial infrastructure.

Thailand needs more commerce not entertainment.

Ports always seem such desolate places to me……hard to imagine what they will do to ‘jazz’ it all up.

Have you been to Barcelona? Many years ago they had many clubs and restaurants around the port, and they were always bustling…I am not sure if they are still there now though.

Having labelled the Bangkok Port as 'iconic' how will they handle the stampede of foreign tourists who have added it to their 'must see' list? 😋
