Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem struggles to define habeas corpus at Senate hearing "Habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country," Noem said. “That’s incorrect,” a Democratic senator responded. Updated May 21, 2025 "I want to clarify your position," Hassan asked. "What is habeas corpus?" "Well, habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country, and suspend their right to ... ," Noem responded before she was cut off by Hassan. "That's incorrect," the senator said. <SKIP> Sen. Andy Kim, D-N.J., later asked Noem if she knew what article of the Constitution the clause is in. "No, I do not, sir," she said. Kim said it was in Article One, which outlines the powers of Congress, not the president. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/homeland-security-secretary-kristi-noem-struggles-define-habeas-corpus-rcna207986 -

Crime Illegal Migrant Workers Found Staffing Karaoke Bar in Nonthaburi, Owner Charged
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Immigration Police raided a popular karaoke venue in Nonthaburi and arrested seven illegal migrant workers, while also charging the Thai owner for employing undocumented foreigners and facilitating illegal entry. The operation followed a tip-off to Immigration Bureau Commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Panumas Boonyalak that a karaoke bar in Bang Kraso subdistrict, Mueang District, Nonthaburi, was operating exclusively for foreign clientele and was highly active on social media platforms popular with migrant communities. A task force led by Pol. Maj. Gen. Chairit Anurit, Commander of Immigration Division 3 and senior officers from the Division’s Special Investigation Unit, conducted surveillance before deploying officers to inspect the premises. The karaoke bar, located in a secluded alley, was found to be staffed almost entirely by foreign workers, who served drinks, sang with customers, and provided entertainment. Patrons were allowed to pay via QR code, which linked to a bank account held by a Myanmar national. Undercover officers confirmed these findings before police moved in to arrest the individuals. Seven undocumented foreign nationals were arrested and charged with “working without permission or outside their legal scope of work.” Additionally, a Thai woman identified only as Ms. G, who claimed ownership of the establishment, was charged with “employing foreign nationals without permission” and “aiding and harbouring illegal immigrants.” All suspects were taken to Rattanathibet Police Station for legal proceedings. Pol. Maj. Gen. Chairit stated that while the charges typically carry fines, the arrested foreign nationals would be subject to deportation and blacklisting, making them prohibited from re-entering the Kingdom. Authorities also found evidence that foreign bank accounts were being used in the bar’s business operations, prompting a wider investigation into potential financial and immigration offences. He reaffirmed that the Immigration Bureau remains committed to cracking down on illegal activities involving both Thai nationals and foreigners. Adapted by Asean Now from Khasod 2025-05-21.
