A 6-year-old boy drowned after falling into a water retention pond while playing with friends in Huai Yai, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. The incident occurred at 15:00 on October 5, at a large retention pond that is part of a local flood management project.

Police Lieutenant Nevin Suntuwanik, along with rescue teams from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation and a water rescue unit, were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a child drowning. The pond, which is about 3-4 metres deep, required divers to recover the body of the young boy, identified as Montree, nicknamed “Pok,” from the bottom of the pond.

A security officer at the site, Mr. Watcharapong (surname withheld), aged 47, recounted that two children came running to him, shouting that their friend had fallen into the water. He rushed to the scene and saw the boy struggling to stay afloat but was unable to rescue him due to the slippery algae-covered edges of the pond.

The boy’s mother, Ms. Dao Chuan, 35, a Cambodian national, was devastated by the news. She explained that her son had been playing outside as usual but rushed to the scene in panic upon hearing that he had fallen into the water. She expressed deep grief over the loss.

Authorities have transferred the boy’s body to Bang Lamung Hospital and are awaiting family arrangements for the funeral. It is believed that the boy accidentally slipped while playing, leading to the tragic drowning.

That´s a good guard. He could have jumped in to save the boy, but as usual he probably excuse himself with the he no can swim.

It certainly sounds that way.  Also, the fact that there was no safety/rescue equipment as per Thai standard was probably a major contribution to the death.

Another totally avoidable death in Thailand...  😟

A shame that the security officer couldn't swim either.

They did the right thing, running to someone they thought they could trust to help.  Sad.

Main reason why we made our daughter take swimming lessons at an early age, since this is the number one cause of child deaths in Thailand.

Yes, of course schools here don't seem to  have the facilities but that is where I learned to swim. No excuse in tourist areas though where there are pools a plenty.
