Man Burns Down Own House in a Fit of Jealousy Over Missed Government Handout

A 56-year-old man in Buriram province set fire to his own home after becoming intoxicated and expressing frustration over not receiving a government handout, while others in his community enjoyed financial aid of 10,000 baht.

 

The incident occurred in Don Mai Fai village, Moo 7, Tapek Subdistrict, Chalerm Phrakiat District. Pol. Lt. Apicha Tiangprakhon, an investigating officer at Chalerm Phrakiat Police Station, received a report of a fire at a house and called local fire trucks to extinguish the blaze.

 

Upon arrival, authorities found flames engulfing the wooden and concrete house, located at 184 Moo 7. Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze as the narrow roads prevented their vehicles from reaching the property easily. It took about an hour to fully extinguish the fire, by which time the house and its contents had been completely destroyed.

 

The homeowner, Mr. Jaturong Kasornnuan, 56, was found sitting nearby in a heavily intoxicated state. When questioned by authorities, he admitted to setting the fire himself using a lighter. He cited frustration over various issues in his life, including the need to work manual labour to support himself, while others in the village received free money from the government and enjoyed themselves.

 

Jaturong’s brother, Mr. Manop Kasornnuan, 48, revealed that the two brothers lived in the house with their elderly mother. Earlier that day, Jaturong had asked their mother for money to buy cigarettes and alcohol, but she had none to give. This led him to start complaining and showing signs of agitation. He first attempted to set fire to the bottom of the house, which Manop managed to put out. However, just minutes later, Jaturong went upstairs and set another fire, which quickly spread and consumed the entire house before it could be stopped.

 

This was not the first time Jaturong had set fire to the family home. Manop explained that his brother had previously been jailed after setting fire to the house in a similar drunken incident. This time, the damage was much worse, leaving the family unsure of how they would rebuild or find shelter.

 

Pol. Col. Wisit Buasangwong, Chief of Chalerm Phrakiat Police Station, confirmed that while no charges have been filed yet, the police are awaiting forensic results. If it is determined that the fire was deliberately set, Jaturong could face criminal charges. For now, he is being held at the police station to sober up.

 

Local authorities will assess the situation for potential assistance, though issues of alcohol-related violence have been increasingly common in the area, prompting the need for a coordinated response from various agencies to find long-term solutions.

But those 10000 would be finnished within a couple of weeks, then the others in the village would have to work again, no reason to burn the house down.

In a fit of what and this and that?! The end result here, is: That will make his life much better. Now he don´t have 10 000 baht, as well as no home. I think the rest of the family are super proud of his actions.

Take away the 10000 baht "trigger" and it's just another day in his life:

It's also just another day in their lives for the many other Thais who appear in the news after self-harming and/or destroying their own homes and property as a means of expressing their hopeless frustration with their desperate, ghastly, dirt poor, meaningless, ineffectual, existence.

 

The same/similar event, minus the 10000, will pop up again soon enough ......as they have so often done in the past.
