Just days before Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris sought to distance herself from President Joe Biden’s remarks that seemingly branded Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage.” The comment, which sparked a swift backlash, left some Democrats privately frustrated with Biden for igniting a political controversy at such a critical time.

"Harris on Biden's "garbage" comment: "I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for..."

Responding to the incident on Wednesday, Harris made clear her stance, expressing a strong disagreement with criticizing people based on their voting choices. “Listen, I think, first of all, he clarified his comments,” she said, adding, “but let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for.” Harris emphasized her commitment to inclusivity, underscoring her record and her dedication to representing all citizens regardless of their political affiliations.

“You heard my speech last night and continuously throughout my career. I believe that the work that I do is about representing all the people whether they support me or not,” Harris said while addressing reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews.

When asked if she had spoken directly with Biden about his remarks, Harris revealed that the president had called her on Tuesday evening, but they did not discuss his comment. She reiterated her commitment to representing all Americans if elected. “I am sincere in what I mean: When elected president of the United States, I will represent all Americans, including those who don’t vote for me, and address their needs and their desires,” Harris emphasized.

The controversy began when Biden, attempting to criticize a Trump rally held over the weekend at Madison Square Garden, referenced a comedian’s comment at the event that described Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” Biden’s paraphrasing of the comedian’s remark unintentionally linked the term "garbage" to Trump’s supporters, sparking a political firestorm just days before voters head to the polls.

Biden’s comment and the subsequent fallout have further fueled tensions within the Democratic Party, with some insiders expressing concern over the president’s remarks potentially alienating undecided voters at a crucial moment. In the final stretch of the campaign, Harris’s efforts to publicly distance herself from Biden’s words reflect a strategic move to mitigate any potential damage, reaffirming her commitment to serving all Americans without partisan bias.
