Prince Andrew’s Financial Independence: King Charles Cuts Royal Support

Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, has reportedly been cut off financially by his brother, King Charles, according to royal biographer Robert Hardman. In an updated version of his biography on King Charles, Hardman claims that the King has ceased funding security costs for Prince Andrew’s residence and has also withdrawn his personal allowance, a move believed to cost several million pounds a year. Buckingham Palace has declined to comment on these claims, which have been highlighted in a recent serialisation by the *Daily Mail*.

PA Media King Charles III looks off camera. He is wearing a shirt and tie and a dark coloured jacket over the top.

Andrew has been under growing financial pressure in recent years due to the costs associated with maintaining his 30-room Royal Lodge, a 19th-century property in Windsor. According to Hardman, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, responsible for managing royal finances, has been instructed to end both the security payments and the personal allowance provided to the Duke of York. The BBC had previously reported that King Charles was reluctant to subsidize Prince Andrew’s lifestyle indefinitely, but this recent claim suggests a definitive decision has now been made.

Without royal funding, Prince Andrew will need to independently manage the upkeep and security costs of Royal Lodge, a listed property leased from the Crown Estate. The prince, who stepped down from official royal duties following his widely publicized 2019 BBC Newsnight interview about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, now faces an uncertain future as he no longer has the royal support previously afforded him. Described by some commentators as “de-royalled,” Prince Andrew has also lost his military titles and royal patronages in the wake of public scrutiny and has since lived a more private life at Royal Lodge.

The question of Prince Andrew’s long-term living arrangements and finances reportedly dates back to discussions before King Charles’s reign. Some sources suggest he may need to relocate to a smaller residence, such as Frogmore Cottage, which was once occupied by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. This property, unlike Royal Lodge, can be offered at the discretion of the monarch and would reduce both security and maintenance costs. However, Andrew’s personal lease on Royal Lodge, lasting until 2078, presents a complex situation. He has reportedly invested heavily in the property, spending over £7.5 million on initial renovations and making additional payments to reduce his annual rental costs, which make him less inclined to give it up.

Documents from the National Audit Office reveal that the prince made a substantial one-off payment of £1 million to his landlords, the Crown Estate. Additionally, he secured an agreement for potential compensation should he leave within the first 25 years of his lease, although this arrangement will soon expire, further diminishing any financial incentive to vacate the property. Despite his reluctance to leave, the absence of royal funding may ultimately compel him to reconsider his situation.

The book quotes a source stating, “The duke is no longer a financial burden on the King,” underscoring the sense of finality in this decision. With the pressures mounting to fund his home independently, Prince Andrew’s future at Royal Lodge remains uncertain as he navigates the demands of financial independence from the monarchy.

Britain's obnoxious equivalent to Donald Trump. But fortunately noone needs to vote for him.

This is just a way to get him out of the royal lodge and into Frogmore cottage.

Well done Charles, now - strip Harry of his titles.

My heart bleeds. He always seemed like a bit of a self entitled fool. He will likely receive little sympathy. He has been a great embarrassment to the family. Ring any bells?

At the start of the year, Epstein is with Andrew at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. They are photographed together; also in the photo is Melania Trump and Gwendolyn Beck.

Prince Andrew throws a shooting weekend for Maxwell's birthday, and Epstein is in attendance. (Andrew denied it was a birthday party in the Newsnight interview, saying it was "just a straightforward, a straightforward shooting weekend.")

Prince Andrew has denied the accusations numerous times. When Maitlis asked him about a photo, first published in 2011, which appears to show Andrew with his arm around Giuffre's waist, he said, "That's me but whether that's my hand or whether that's the position I… but I don't… I have simply no recollection of the photograph ever being taken." He also said it couldn't have been him, because he says he was at a Pizza Express in Woking that evening.

He probably still has enough to come and open a bar with the Nightwish group in Pattaya.

He could manage it and make some extra from “manager drinks”.

Brian could check the IDs of the girls to make sure they were old enough. He likes them young so someone would have to oversee the recruitments.

Andrew has long been known as both useless & an a/hole. Ask any senior Brit bureaucrat. (He was once delegated to represent the overly-busy then Prince of Wales in Wales. After his first visit to Wales, the phones started ringing back in Whitehall saying: Please please never send that person here ever ever again!)

As I understand, he used also to be an occasional visitor to Phuket. Always alone.

Don't feel sorry for him, there's always plenty of people to talk to in Phuket.

I once spent an entertaining night drinking in a Chinese Restaurant in Cambelltown, in the company of the officers from the ship he commanded.

It is a long story, suffice it to say that there is not much else to do in Campbelltown when it's raining ( it usually is).

To a man, they loathed him.

Don't think he cares, as Harry & family are doing just fine.  Not that he needed, but got a nice boost last month ($8.5M), thank G'Mum.

Added plus ... being away from that horrid family 👍

Most folk take their hand out of the family purse and start standing in their own two feet while still teenagers.

Middle age man no longer financially supporters by his big brother would be a more fitting headline.

I'm in two minds here. While he deserves all he gets, he didn't ask to be born into the royal family. The king isn't just his brother. As a birthright royal he's entitled to suck on the royal teat until death. Maybe doing so might remind the good folks of Britain of the fallacy of birthright entitlement.

Yes he got his 30 pieces of silver for selling out his family in the moanfest Spare. Bravo.

That only works once.

His lifestyle of taking private jets to polo matches and having hordes of security following you in Range Rovers to preach about the climate isn't cheap. Assuming he has that much (I don't believe he has) then it will last him 2-3 years. Expect a divorce from that awful gold digging woman followed by a grovelling return to the UK in around 2026-2027. Maybe sooner if Trump checks his visa application.

Trump won't do that. I don't think checking the visa applications of awful gold digging women is his thing.

Not supporting your brother while having infinite money yourself seems a bit mean to me.

If I were Andy, I'd be writing a reveal all book on the royal family and dishing the dirt.

His last attempt to face the public in the Emily Maitlis interview didn't go well.

Perhaps there are more people around who would like to dish the dirt on him?
