BBQ, the ribs was so tiny that you eat the bones. Crunchy

Dry rub BBQ or wet BBQ?   I prefer wet.

Please tell us where rat meat is so widely eaten across Asia?

Apart from Cambodia when it was having a really tough time, I don't know of anywhere TBH

Certainly 3-4 years ago there were  substantial exports of rats from Cambodia to Vietnam, and I mean urban rats not the rice paddy variety. You would see guys with head torches hunting them at night in PP. Maybe things have changed

I have eaten rat meat in Indonesia not the ground hog but the real thing. Small bits on meat on a skewer , real tough but the sauce was good.

Years ago (maybe still?) outside Lupini park in Banggers, had a guy selling snakes blood.

Just a quick shot and off to work you go.

Met a guy on a course who kept snakes for food. Said the snake penis was great as well as the snake venom. Gave a real high he said, but one had to increase the dose slowly.

He looked a bit like a snake too. Darker oily skin. Yuck!

It helps a lot that as a Brit I like cricket and one of my colleagues was a member of Bangalore Cricket Club.

This had two bonuses, I got to watch IPL matches for a very small fee (OK I had to buy him dinner) and we could drink beer whilst watching which the masses could not.

Bangalore was pretty ok, Hyderabad too, but I hated Mumbai and to a lesser extent Delhi. The less said about Kolkata the better, but the taxi ride to the airport is a story in itself 🙂

Staying in Pattaya now for a month and not sure if this is the place to
pick for my retirement,
A dead rate at the entrance of the market, next almost being hit by a motor bike INSIDE the market.
And the roaring, thundering noise of scooters and BIG motorbikes all around Pattaya is scaring me ever time when they pass me with high speed, is deafening and annoying.
In the late afternoon or early evening, it is not enjoyable walking alongside the beach road at Jomtien.

You are right. Don't even think about it!

If not, you will end up joining the team that keeps complaining about every thing and anything eternally. Thai bashing will be the norm.

Enjoy your stay (if that is possible) and go back home to your normal comforts.

Maybe true, Hua Hin or somewhere even quieter maybe. It  is not the same place it was, is getting too crowded and traffic is an ever worsening issue. It becomes less attractive when into older age. Bloody good fun  before that though!

Op.

Just rent a place for a year, if you don't like it move on.

Nearly every other place in Thailand apart from Bangkok will be dull in comparison.

but it's all about what you want in the way of enjoyment in retirement.

Don't buy a condo or house straight away.

keep your options open

Thai style.. No spices. Dipping sauces. I really have tried to convince Thai that wet marinade is the way.,.

Have you tried BangSaray, just 20 min South of Pattaya. Live and work in Pattaya but enjoy Sundays in BangSaray

Indeed Ratanakorn Market at Thepprasit.
What upset me, is that I asked 2 guys from 2 different stalls to remove that dead rat, but they didn't care. I checked 2 hours later... it was still there.
Rats are everywhere, no problem, but that vendors leave a dead rat near their stalls for hours, while tourists, families with children walk there.... disgusting.

Not sure how widely eaten it is but I have seen rats barbecuing at one of the local markets near Hua Hin. Didn't ask what price.

Frog legs are also on the menu at a restaurant near there and actually my friend wanted to order it. The waitress said they didn't have any today and my friend asked: "why not?" She grinned and said they never caught any today.
