They got me! Youtube finally annoyed me enough to pay for Premium.

If you you use youtube a lot you know how they have made skipping ads much less viable and sometimes you need to wait a really really long time. Other times weirdly a one hour video will play without interruption.

Well they finally got to me! I resisted for a long time but the thousands of cuts (waits) finally did the trick.

The cost in Thailand is 179 baht a month after one month free. My understanding is that it's much more expensive in the U.S. and other countries, so that's an incentive.

I signed up using a Thai debit card for online shopping for the first time because I figured using a US card would make the Thai rate questionable.

Unfortunately that proved to be a bit of problem trying two different cards.

The first attempt signed me out of youtube and first tried to force me to do a Thai language verification process. Google sent me a security red alter. Somehow dodged that not sure how and finally got it sorted.

YTube ads were bothering us for a while so we signed up for the Premium free trial but did not subscribe past its expiry.  That was about 3 months ago... the ads have not returned.

We use the Brave browser.  Do you?

I also noticed during the time that we were forced to watch ads that I could dodge the ads by copying the URL of the video, then switching to a Brave tab that was logged into a different Google account and paste the URL and it would run without ads.

Welcome to 2024, you will now find you can close your phone and it will play in the background.

I started paying last year sometime when they increased the ads, total waste of my time, especially when I'm just listening to some music or something where there's multiple videos.

I do wonder though, does the content producer get paid only on ad views or the number of plays?

Because if it's purely on ad views then they're directly competing against their own creators which seems counterintuitive.

youtube family is priced at 469 baht for five people.... if enough cheap charlies can get together and pool in 93 baht each you'll save a whole bottle of beer a month

Screen snapshot from youtube here in the USA.  I currently prefer Firefox as my browser although of course youtube sign in is now part of google.  No idea if other offers or discounts are available

If you watch a lot of YouTube, it's a good deal. 179 baht a month for something I spend a lot of time in is a steal. That's about the cost of one beer in a decent bar.
