Lao khao  เหล้าขาว (Thai) or ເຫຼົ້າຂາວ (Laotian) translated into English is "white spirit" and distilling  in Thailand must be licensed under the Criminal Activities Act which was introduced in the 1950s. This regulation was passed after a spate of lao khao of poor quality being produced, which resulted in methanol related poisoning. The methanol was produced as a by-product of the spirits reacting with tin and aluminium stills used. The metals were switched out with stainless steel when the Thai government took over all distilleries by 1960. Not sure what the story is in Lao.

Perhaps you did not read into the story then... It is happening at Vang Vien in Laos...

So the victims were either poisoned by a rapist or they all happened to have consumed some drinks that contained methanol, which was either a free drink or drinks that they purchased from the same place.

Or could it have been something along the lines of the snake blood scene from "the beach"

I wouldn't think of a rapist. Probably no intention even to poison the girls but a horrible mistake during distillation.

And it was far more than only ONE shot of "vodka".

I hope those responsible are held to account, this is a very alarming situation, I think I'll give Laos a miss

In the meantime every source of methylated spirit is in the garbage already. Not easy to find the culprit

so am I going to get tainted beer or spirits from drinking at my local established registered farang bar ?

no,   I didn't think so .....

You never know.  The profits are huge.

It may not be the proprietor, but the distributor/deliveryman bringing you cases of counterfeit rotgut that then gets served.  Possibly, one of your barbacks is slipped some money to not look at the labels too closely.  And for anyone who thinks the criminals can't do their own labels and capping on bottles to look like brand new hooch...

We've all likely been served fake booze somewhere or other, luckily, most of them just use crap ethanyl  and not added methanyl.

The hostel manager told the press that the ill-fated night began with free shots of local Lao vodka, dispensed generously to more than 100 guests.

My cure from methanol poisoning was three rounds of hemodialysis.   That removed the methanol from my blood.   Labeling in Thailand needs to be improved.  When tins of methanol are simply labeled “Alcohol” disastrous mistakes can happen.

I'll bet these kids were all laughing at the "Old Coffin Dodgers" they saw in Thailand on the way.

Ironically, they're the ones needing a coffin now.  😃

What a charming comment to make about 6 dead people who were at their beginning of their adult lives and fulfilling their travel dreams. What a laugh that is...not

those 5 are young blond women (no?). Somebody spiked their drinks with alcohol that was actually methanol probably thinking to take advantage of them when they were intoxicated.

yes, you probably nailed it.

hot young blonde western women are targets/ a highly sought after prize.

these women should probably travel with men accompanying them, and even then in groups is better.

but of course western feminism has brainwashed them that they can do anything alone and don't need men to protect them and then they venture into remote corrupt countries on their own.

women probably shouldn't be traveling alone anywhere.

so 30% of the blame to corrupt laos.

30% of the blame to the girls.

and 30% of the blame to feminism.
