A 22-year-old man lost his life after being swept under into concrete drainage structure by a strong current while diving for fish, in Lampang in the early hours of November 27.

The incident occurred at around 00:05 near a weir in Wiang Nuea Subdistrict, Mueang Lampang District. Authorities were alerted by the victim’s companion, who witnessed the incident, but was unable to provide assistance due to the swift current.

The deceased was identified as Mr. Songphop, a resident of Mae Suk Subdistrict, Chae Hom District, Lampang. According to initial reports, Mr. Songphop had been diving to catch fish with a friend in the area, at a point where the water flow was particularly strong. While underwater, the current forced him into a concrete drainage tunnel, where he became trapped and drowned.

Rescue teams from the Thara underwater search unit and Sawang Nakhon Lampang rescue foundation responded to the scene. They coordinated with the Lampang Municipality to temporarily close the weir gates, reducing the water flow to facilitate the search. Divers located Mr. Songphop’s body, wedged beneath the submerged concrete.

Officials from Mueang Lampang Police Station and forensic doctors from Lampang Hospital inspected the scene and will conduct an autopsy.
