My Gov, the app

What's it like calling an AU help line from overseas because the app keeps crashing and getting assistance from someone who obviously is suffering from bad morning syndrome? 

 

Like it's obvious yeah that you mentioned the app crashes you deleted it that you cant access your account right?  the over 50 miss fires back faster than the latest Israeli machine gun barely letting you get a word in then wonders why she cant understand what your talking about, you start to get pissed because you are constantly repeating yourself  she detects you raising your voice then ends the call after you waited 10 min to get to talk to her.

 

What's worse is this isn't the first time, went through the ordeal around sept, set it all up again, worked fine last week, we are talking about the my gov app code generator, used it to access last week, crashing this week, called yesterday, the guy seemed to understand what was required to set up a new my gov account, never received that email, todays call got me in, to link the ATO so I could get to read there letter had to link the code generator, it crashed, again.

 

The plot thickens, is it the app or is it Apple? did update to 17. what ever for security reasons, (because it was strongly recommended) between last week and this weeks attempt to use the My Gov app code generator, I refuse to get the iOS 18.1.1 well until march about, after mucho heartache after new iPhones hit the shelves, 15pro here, last year was like slowly killing me for months, talking software updates for new iPhones they roll out each sept, three times ive been caught, last year obviously a new phone so what could you do? back with my iPhone XR, the year later I think was the worst, so I no longer do software updates when a new iPhone hits the shelf's till about march the following year, until they recommended 17 what ever for important Sercurity updates and it was stressed, important.

 

I can expect a nice phone bill from AIS end of next month.

Obviously too late for the OP but this is a reminder to the rest of us to never delete the app unless we have changed all our sign-in settings first (they give this warning when you open it).  My app has worked perfectly for years thankfully.

They have emailed me new account details to start over twice before, but yes got it this time, would not use the generator if my ATO was not linked.

Ive strarted to think more along the lines of Apple, and the app people have been slow to respond.

No, works perfectly without vpn.

 

The whole reason the my gov code generator app was created was for people to not have to get a code by sms (as in for Aussies living overseas without aussie mobile anymore) so of course it doesn't need a vpn

No the app does not work perfectly fine, this is the third time for me it's crashed and its still unresolved, set up a new account for the MyGov code generator while on the phone with them once I logged in it crashed instantly, and support hadn't an idea why, so there useless.

 

I use an apple 15 iPhone the code generator worked fine before the first of 3 updates came through the first update the code generator crashed, 2 more since hasn't restored it, im thinking it could be the software updates but why not its just a <deleted>ty app? If it was the software updates MyGov would have had enough feedback by now and the app people would have been on to it.

 

I asked them if I could have the code generator on my tablet, No, has to be on the phone they said, like some people change there phone yearly even every two years, I dont keep a phone longer than 3 normal, its a hassle, I was thinking to get a second cheaper phone and just use it for a few basic things, an android this time, meanwhile I have a letter to read and cant get access to it...

I have a new Samsung and the mygov app was easy to transfer for me. Basically I followed their instructions of changing my log in process to not include the generator before deleting the app from old phone and then installed it on new phone and signing up again. This is my 3rd Samsung phone in 5 years and as I said for me it's worked perfectly

I posted a while ago in another thread, and I stand by it. 

 

The day is fast approaching where many companies in Australia will have compulsory 2FA to log in, and most likely by way of SMS.  A lot of companies will not send an SMS to a foreign number. 

 

Aldi sim and Amaysin are good choices for this propose.  They are on the network 365 days, and for small money.

I still have a Telstra Sim. The best part is once it expired I still got 6 months before they delete account and for some reason I still recieved sms in Thailand even though expired (only out calls/sms are blocked)

 

So I have now changed plan to 6 months with limited data/calls for $35. l just let it expire, and still get sms as before so will sign up again closer to 6 months expired to keep it going (so $35 per year effectively)

My post was more aimed at those Aussie expats that do not have an existing Australia telco sim card.

How's an aussie expat going to pick up an Aldi sim? You pretty much need to just keep your old sim going when you leave like I did, not buy a new one when you're already in Thailand

Yes yes yes but...because they often dont inform you they are updating log in they snap it shut, years ago I got a donegal for internet banking, left my sister with power of attorney to fix things just in case, working ok, now my gov, suspect the Australian government hasn't caught up with Apple Sercurity, my commsec was locked not because of me but because of customer service asking a question about an account I was unfamiliar with when suggesting another name the suspect account could be called that I understood never answered which it turns out was correct then the p.r.i.c.k. locks my account, you got to have a bright spark on the other end of the call too, sister goes to the Commbank and the manger said "ho this happens a lot with Australians living overseas" you want to see what commsec sent to me that I needed to do to get back into my account, near impossible but living n HK or China...

 

For 2 factor authorisation there is email, quite a few use this method why does it need to be an SMS? like phones dont get hacked and taken over? How many people do you think run around with phones that no longer get Sercurity and software updates? There are security questions to answer too if you call, sure we understand about Sercurity and that scammers are becoming a major problem, im not complaining but gees MyGov has a history of the app crashing for some of us...

That's why I am posting about it now.  To prepare members for the inevitable.  Members can do with the information what you will, but it's already happening.

True, but guess what, to register your email they want to send an SMS code to the phone number they have on record for you.

Thanks for how you do it, I went and bought an android phone as a back up, after new year I will call them and see what they say if im still have problems will try set myGov up on the android phone and keep my fingers crossed, id like to say if im still having issues they can go screw them selves but of course I will conform.

I have used used Samsung Android phones forever.

 

I have no difficulty to get into Mygov, the 'code' appears quickly in my messages on my Samsun phone, entered on my notebook, sign in complete.

I'm lost, what is the 'Mygov app'?

 

Is this a 100% completely new method to login to "Mggov", especially from abroad? (Me in Thailand).

 

One report I just read detailed the normal login method using my previously indicated preferred option of the Mygov system using one of the three pre set personal questions and answers, in other words no different from before.

 

But other reading talks about an app. Now I'm lost.

 

Please advise, appreciated.

Why bother to use it ?

You said in another post your a eminent university professor in Bangkok but don't know how to use a Australian government app and there's nothing wrong with that !

 

I have the same issues, especially with that app ,they intentionally made it difficult, I'm thru all these new technology I have had an gutful.

 

They recently introduced at my work where you can now do any updated training online on a ....app.

I won't do it I can assure you and will ask for a private trainer ...at your expense to come out!

You can get one posted to you by a friend or relative.

 

I have an Aldi SIM for Australia, a Truemove SIM for Thailand. Both pay as you go.

 

Topping up phone credit with an Aldi SIM is about as easy as it gets.

 

I don't use apps on my phone, I prefer a laptop.

You dont need the MyGov code generator app if you dont have the ATO linked to it, you can just do the questions, it would appear that the app makers haven't come to terms with close to half the country owning iPhones, as it turns out I will not be needing to do my tax through My Gov this year I will need an accountant so that code generator can sit there till sept 2026.

 

As a foot note on one of my phone calls, (3 times over 4 ys) in total to get the code generator up and running.....again.....one customer service operator said they had been having issues.

Centrelink International number when calling from Thailand

I have not used this number recently. Only made calls to Centrelink International a few months ago whilst in Australia, very helpful although the wait to be connected was around 40 minutes.

 

Someone else may have recent experience of wait time when calling from Thailand
