I assumed this was Thai men renting out their wives or something weird, not just normal escorting/prostitution, hardly a groundbreaking book is it... Yes Holiday GFs are a thing, I live on Samui and this is pretty normal, a guy picks up a girl in Bangkok and brings her down for company (and the obvious extras) rather than eat and do things alone.

My rental always came in useful for minding the bags while I walked around looking for a place to stay.

It was way cheaper renting in Pattaya and taking them to the islands. Many places on Thai beaches didn't have rentals available, and the ones in the town were far too expensive as scarcity increases prices.

When I was working in Saudi I was able to afford Bkk Gogo rentals, but the UK isn't as lucrative to work in, so it was a stop off in Pattaya on the way south.

I'll never understand why truly wealthy men marry......pretty damn sure if I win the lottery there'll be no wife anywhere to be seen.

Probably same reason as most of us. Think it's going to be sex without having to go look for it in a bar. Usually wrong.

Re the lottery, agreed. Contract with an escort agency would be the cheese.

Nothing trendy about the name. It nothing more than the ignorance of some to put them all alongside rent boys.

There is no dispute that Thailand has, like every other country, many involved in prostitution, but there is also a great number of girls just trying to escape poverty. A foreign husband is a fairly common way out and bar scene was little more than the origin of  "dating apps", now widely used in the west.

In the UK, Wetherspoons have a "try before you buy" arrangement on real ale, nothing wrong with tourists taking a similar approach.

It's prostitution, plain and simple, no matter how you try to dress it up. Everyone can make an excuse for selling themselves, poverty usually being top of the list.

Lack of education is also another to limit a person's opportunities.

We hear this old chestnut also trotted out as an excuse for thefts, robberies, burglaries, citing poverty and poor childhoods, over here and in the West.

Regarding dating apps, they are more popular than ever in Thailand, especially for those who don't wish to stand on a stage and don a number.

Lastly, many of them forget that their reason was poverty or to help out family once they hit the lights of Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket and soon find other vices to drain any money that they get.

All night partying, drinking until out of control, gambling and drugs to mention just a few.

The salute should go out to those who choose not to go down this route and work near their homes in menial jobs to keep themselves above water.

Fairly obvious how you have spent your time in Thailand, creating a blinkered view with everything under the same umbrella, completely ignoring what was said.

The OP is about temporary relationships, dating apps in a nutshell, but according to you they are only "prostitution apps" in Thailand. That falang mentality again.

Prostitutes date back centuries but it was the western prudes that attached a stigma. In biblical times goods were often used in payment for sexual favours, not much different to the ways in many countries.

You are talking a lot but not saying much.

Payment for goods and valuables by sexual services is the definition of prostitution.

A temporary relationship?

You mean like the bigoted way ISIS and Muslim fighters got married ' for the night '  and divorced the day after, so they could bypass the laws on not having sex outside marriage!

Ridiculous, just call it what it is, no shame in it, unless you want to see it that way, but don't try putting lipstick on as pig.

I'm not at all shocked.

What does shock me is all the billionaires marrying second hand wives.

Jeff Bezos with all his money finds himself a 50yo woman .......... why?

On the other hand,

Leonardo DiCaprio gets it right by trading in his used 25yos for new 18yos every few years.

Some things are not worth explaining to you,....

What is the controversial part of 'rental wives' in Pattaya? The whole existence of Pattaya as it is, is based on rentals, though more of girlfriends than wives. So maybe it indeed  is the 'rented wife' that is controversial issue, however that is rare. Isn't the whole concept of rented wife an oxymoron

This is nothing new I met a guy on Samui 20 years ago who came for a month once a year he used to hire a female companion for the duration of his stay he told me he had been using the same Bangkok lady for the last three years he also told me she did it as a living and had a regular customer data base

Thailand’s notorious “rental wife” trend is turning heads and sparking heated debates. Dubbed the “black pearl” phenomenon, this controversial practice is thriving in Pattaya’s red-light districts, offering foreign tourists a temporary taste of companionship for a fee.

The practice, often called “temporary marriage,” sees women from impoverished rural areas become companions to tourists, offering services ranging from casual companionship to acting as tour guides. Contracts last anywhere from a few days to several months, with fees varying based on the woman’s looks, age, and education—ranging from US$1,600 to an eye-watering US$116,000.

Lavert A. Emmanuel’s new book, Thai Taboo: The Rise of Wife Rental in Modern Society, dives into this shadowy world, describing how the practice, once hidden, has now become a significant income source for young people struggling to make ends meet.

“This isn’t just a transactional arrangement. Some women end up marrying their clients, while others maintain long-term paid relationships.”

Inspired by similar services in Japan and South Korea, Thailand’s rental wife trend caters to the loneliness that comes with urbanisation and demanding lifestyles. Tourists, drawn by Thailand’s reputation for hospitality, often initiate arrangements in bars, restaurants, or nightclubs, negotiating terms directly with the women.

Despite its prevalence, the practice operates in a legal grey area. While the Thai government acknowledges its existence, there are no laws regulating it. Critics argue that this lack of oversight leaves women vulnerable to exploitation.

Cultural factors also play a role. Thailand’s relatively liberal attitude towards relationships means these arrangements face less stigma than they might elsewhere. For some, the rental wife industry represents a way to bridge economic gaps, but for others, it’s a troubling reflection of societal inequality, reported News18.

Bad idea if they are anything like my wife it will be sex once a month, no cooking and getting up at mid day, then spending the rest of it on their phones. They should offer a free trial period to show whats on offer.

You've forgotten to mention that once their false masks slip the real disturbing Thai psycho, mood swings, jealousies, abusive natures, destructive personas and must save face at all costs rises to the fore like Godzilla emerging from a thawing glacier!

As well as taking it up the bum and letting you take pics to later blackmail her with

50k thb?      I pay 10K week and get many inquiries.   Generally every two or three weeks.   They are happy, treated well, get to travel with me and clean my house like it’s new.   No complaints either side.

If it floats, flies or fleeces you, don’t buy it, rent it.
