The doggy worshipers will always claim culling does not work as other dogs will just more in to replace the dead ones, so cull them as well, get the army in on the job. Soi Dog foundation etc has proven to only slightly keep the population growth down and neutered dogs can still attack. It's just dogs Thais are sentimental about and we know why by cannot say. They are not going to do anything unless a mass rabies outbreak happens.

What's with the "cannot say" thing - stop being so mysterious. It's such a rookie move.

The reason culls don't happen is Buddhism. Plain and simple.

It's one thing killing a dog. It's another thing killing your re-incarnated Grandma.

There's no mystery here.

This is a terrible lack of responsibility on the part of the local authorities.

If you must, carry pepper spray, or a can of insect spray. Nearly all creatures hate insect spray, as they cannot handle the smell. A long strong bamboo staff also helps. If nothing else works, culling is a good practice. I do not want a lecture about animal cruelty. . Most soi dogs are a nuisance. Most are mangy, some are disease ridden, many are hungry, tired, and lead terrible lives of desperation. Some attack people, some terrorize neighborhoods. Many harass the domestic dogs, and cause them to bark all night long, like in my neighborhood. Nobody wants to do anything about it. Culling is the answer. If they found a budget for it, they could do it Western style. Round up the dogs, clean them up, vaccinate them, and put them up for adoption. The ones who are not adopted after 60 days are simply put down. Nothing cruel about it. Not doing something like this, is both cruel to the dogs and to the neighborhoods they infest.

The average dog bite cost alot money. A series of rabies shots, etc. And that is assuming someone was not hurt badly, like a small child. So, we should prioritize the health of mangy, miserable soi dogs over the well being of the human population?

Insect spray is genius.. never heard that one. Stick that up ya super sensitive snout

I thought that too - you can buy big cans of insect spray with a range way longer that the street pepper spray here.

Me - I live in what's considered to be a Muslim area of Bangkok. Guess how many strays I encounter walking 12-18km a day round here?

If you live here or have read this forum for some time you should know what cannot be mentioned. How come Buddhism does not stop all the pigs, chickens and fish being slaughtered everyday?

Because most muslims don't even like dogs due to the nonsense story of an Angel telling Muhammad they don't visit a house with a dog in it. Arguable if they are haram or not, but viewed as filthy unclean beasts only fit for guard duty.

Good question, one I've been asking for over 60 years. Still waiting for an answer that makes sense. I understand that slaughterhouses are mainly staffed by foreigners and Thais who are not Buddhists. Most Buddhist Thais, nevertheless, have no problem with eating animals, they just do not want to be involved in the killing process. All rather puzzling.

I agree that the solution is to capture and then relocate these dogs off the island. I would not agree to just killing them,

"Residents are urging authorities to relocate stray dogs off the island to restore safety and protect its tourism-dependent economy."

Yes  - relocate them to a nearby country where I am sure they will be greatly appreciated, and enjoyed even more so at meal times. At least they will have served a purpose!

Avoid Thailand!

Wild, uncontrolled dogs everywhere.

Not safe for tourists.

Stay away from Thailand.

Oh, this might end up in being expelled from Thailand because I damaged the high-class reputation of Thailand as a peaceful, world-class holiday destination. 🤭

I've been there. The dogs were indeed very menacing.

Dogs are bullies.

They start off barking and it emboldens them if they are not punished for it. Graduating to biting is inevitable.

I have a dog - that I love dearly - but I would absolutely cull dogs myself if they needed a volunteer.

The dog does not love you, it just wants feeding

It is the Buddhist belief of not neutering or euthanizing any animals...

The strange thing is that I am aware of a lot of Thai villagers that have killed dogs that attack their chickens or ducks. But attack people, no problem!

I am also aware of a lot of Thai women that have been sterilised after 2 children.

It’s  not only in tourist areas they’re everywhere. I’ve known instances were a Soi Dog has been accidentally hit by a motorized vehicle and immediately one of the local residents immediately appears demanding money from the driver to compensate them for the loss of their beloved dog. It’s one big racket.

Over  here in Pattaya, we also have the "Soi Dog Mafia" to deal with.  I carry a metal rod, the kind that cops use, to fend off those mafia dogs.  I have no problems killing or injuring one or two or three of those dogs...they will learn quickly who the alpha dog is.

There is an easy solution to this problem....poison them  and thin the herd.

I  would kill most of them and feed them to the wild animals in the jungle.

Maybe the do-gooders could take care of those dogs. They should take them home.

It's OK to not understand dogs.

But open displays of ignorance are rather gauche, don't you think?

Go ahead save them and take them to your home.

Let us know if it goes any different than the guy who took in 2 and now is beyond himself about what to do.
