She pushed me to apply - she applied (for me) online where that application went to Bangkok RD. They forwarded it to Phuket RD.  Phuket RD called our household (on the phone), and my Thai wife did all the talking on the phone.

 

So no tax-ID, but my Thai wife had her way in trying to apply for such for me. She is happy that she tried.

 

And a happy wife is a happy life. 😂

I am on an LTR visa.  To qualify for the LTR I used a condo purchase from almost a decade ago as proof of my investment in Thailand, together with foreign pension income, where I don't bring that foreign income into Thailand.

 

Prior to being on the LTR visa, I was on a Type-OA, and later a Type-O visa.  I did not want to bother with the 65K THB/month approach for the annual extension , so I simply put 800k THB in a Thai bank and promptly forgot about that money until annual extension time came around.   I was not interested / concerned about low interest on such a (for me) trivial amount. 

 

Apologies if that (forgetting about the 800k) appears elitist, or harsh (for those who are stunned anyone would put 800k THB in a low interest bearing Thai bank account).  I worked hard and saved money all my life, and now that I am retired I am fortunate to have the benefits of that being ... relatively trivial.

 

As for living,  I have been gradually, legally, been moving money into Thailand since year 2005, increasing the amount in 2016 up to year 2023, when I stopped bringing money in.

 

I plan to now wait and see how the tax return requirements pan out. Life is too short to worry about such so I will take a conservative approach.

So I plan just to monitor this situation , and wait - (hoping in the mean time that an unexpected massive expense might not come up (such as my wife wanting us to buy a new condo (while keeping the old condo) or something crazy like that)).

 

For Scouse123 ... what tax office did you visit?

When I went to the Kamphaeng Phet district tax office, my wife spoke to them in Thai and we were politely advised to come back in January with a 12 month bank statement saying how much income I had transferred to Thailand during 2024.

 

They will fill the forms in Thai and tell me if I need to pay tax in Thailand, and if needed they will give me a TIN.

 

I have no idea about the disabled part of your post.

Your post makes sense and is the right way for a tax office to go about things.

 

I will be following your route in January.

 

I am not concerned in the slightest about owing them anything, but at least I will have followed the rules, no matter how ambiguous they are.

 

It stops any silly assessment of tax in the future, if your book work is in order at least, I imagine.

The only PITA for me is that both Bangkok Bank (which will take 2 trips, 1 tom order the 12 month statement and another to collect it at least 3 working days later) and the tax office, are 65km away.

 

I think I will need to make 3 trips as I will need to highlight in 3 different colours, my pensions as 2 are assessable and one is not.

 

It will make it easier for the tax office and for me as well as I can do the highlighting and then scan the statements onto my pc.

Out of curiosity, did your tax office, in the circumstances, bother issuing you with a bit of paper 6cm x 8cm approx with your TIN, as mine did when I obtained my TIN a few months ago (I don't have a pink card)?

If I recall correctly your 3 pensions are military (non-assessable), company and State (both assessable). Would be most interested to hear in due course how your office treats the last 2 for taxation purposes!

I am due a 90 day report on 14 January, so I will order the statements on that day. I should pick them up around the 21st, and aim for the tax office around 28th January, giving me about a week to annotate and scan the statements, so it will probably be done in about 5 weeks time.

 

From a conversation with Mike Lister when this thing started, I don't think at 80, given the tax allowances that I am entitled to, that I will have to pay any tax in Thailand, and if that is the case I am not sure if I will actually be given a TIN, at least for 2024 though I do have a "pink" Thai ID card.

 

I have put a reminder on my pc calendar.

This is what I thought of doing as well. Show up in the first weeks in January with a statement from Bangkok Bank showing my 2024 transfers in Thailand. That is the easy part, I think.

 

The hard part, unless Thailand is using an honor system, is showing how much my USA Social Security pension is, as that portion of my income is not assessable. Is this the total amount before Medicare deductions or just the amount deposited into my bank account? So I'll take my annual SS letter with me.

 

My transfers are over this SS amount but less than the total SS exemption amount plus the standard Thai income tax deductions. So I should not owe any tax.

 

I pay taxes on all of my income in the USA and my income is only SS and private pensions. No investment income. My accountant in the USA says any tax I pay to Thailand is deductible from US taxes.

I don't think that the Thai tax department is interested in how much SS you get paid, but they are probably more interested in how much you transfer into Thailand. They will also be interested in your age, if you have children of school age or at college/uni, as they will affect how much your tax allowance in Thailand will be.

 

Please don't accept this as gospel as it is only my thoughts.

 

There is a guy called Mike Lister on the AN forum who knows far more than I do and if you send him a PM he may well be able to help you. The majority of the posters on AN who talk about paying Thai income tax know as much as you and I, which is not a lot,  and many have their own ideas about what they will or will not do if they have to pay tax.

 

As for me, I have 3 pensions, 2 assessable and one non assessable, so I will go to the RTD in January and see if they are able to sort it out. 

 

I will post the results on the forum but it will probably be the end of January before I know about my case and whether I have to pay tax or not.

Yes they gave me the 6 x 8 piece of paper, it has my address on and pink card number to use as TIN.
