It is a violation of the law to be inside Thailand WITHOUT a valid passport. That's one of the reasons given for the double-shuffle UK passport renewal in Thailand allowing you to keep the "old" one until the "new" one is received, with the old one cancelled after you have checked the new one for correctness. However, if certain countries think this isn't relevant, then you don't have an option.

 

For the OP, despite cutting it fine already with Christmas and New Year holidays in Canada, I doubt the local embassy uses snail mail. The UK passport renewal involves DHL and the turnaround is typically between 2 and 3 weeks. My Australian mate just renewed his passport via their Bangkok embassy and it was only 12 days, again they use either diplomatic bag or courier.

12 days. That's fast.

I renewed my Oz pp March and from post application to embassy in Bangkok to delivery on new pp (mail) it was 20 days.

I was impressed.

The only answer is, go to the Canadian embassy in Bangkok and talk to them.

Thailand has no such requirement for Canadian (and many other) passport holders.  They only require it to be valid for the period of intended stay.

100% correct.

Note that while Thai immigration at airports etc do not that requirement some airlines may have an issue.

Thailand is bit unique with the "6 month validity" rule.

OK, but that still doesn't help him unless he can find another country to bounce out to.   I doubt any of the neighboring countrys will allow him enter with less than 6 months remaining.

Why use the Canadian Post?  Surely Canada has other mail delivery services such as FedEx.

Have you thought of using DHL or Fedex to send your new passport as the Canada Post is striking, I am sure these companies are still working taking advantage of the strike

As an AMERICAN

I sent my PP for renewal 8 weeks before expired. 5 days ( including a weekend ) before my extension expired I got a EMERGENCY ( 1 year ) PP from my embassy. Used it for my extension. 2 days AFTER extension stamps in EMERGENCY PP, I received my 10 year.

NO problems transferring stamps to 10 year PP.

Yesterday I spoke with my friend who works for Canada Post.  He said they are not going back to work any time soon.

If I were you I would fly back to Canada and get a new passport in person.  

Unless the Canadian passport office will send back your new passport by Fedex.
