I've had enough of the Tourist Ghettos in Thailand!

Nakhon Phanom , a small city on the banks of the River Mekong.

Nice people, few tourists, cheap accommodation.

When you say cheap accommodation, are you meaning Pattaya style simple furnished rooms for about 5,000 baht a month.?

I know your not a brain surgeon SaintDom but it obviously would be "different" wouldn't it , because it's in the country area so wouldn't be the same

I often wonder how people like yourself get through the day ,pay bills ,catch public transport etc

Enough is Enough.

Tourist ghettos no more, I am done with them, the tourists (especially you know who) are destroying this beautiful country with their terrible manners, unruly kids and general disregard for others around them and the environment. I need some new scenery or I am going to go mad (if I haven't already reached that point)..

I would like to enlist the help of fellow AN members in asking where do you recommend I go with the following stipulations:

1. Hardly any farangs in sight, especially tourists.

2. Remote places, can be mountainous, towns, city, beach, jungle, whatever.

3. Reasonable food

4. Reasonable room rates

5. Real local people, no tourist BS.

I welcome any and all input into this topic. Finally the tourist ghettos have worn me down - it took a while but it has finally happened. Now I understand Joe who retires way out in the sticks on a nice plot of land and a couple water buffalo with his young thai bride. There is something real in that kind of life that the ghetto just cannot provide.

Wherever the tourists are going this high season, I'm not. I want a comprehensive list of places that are truly off the beaten track.

Thank you in advance!

How do you know whether or not....

Wherever you go....

Your Ghetto will soon follow you?

Drop a pin in any city/town in Issan and forget about seeing many farangs.

You can make it what you want, but won't be the Soi 6 world for sure

I like Khon Kaen. Fairly cosmopolitan, infrastructure not bad.

Decent night life, without the hooker shops and not bad restaurants

A lot depends of course on language skills.

In the tourist traps, hate them or not you can live without speaking Thai.

Live upcountry and you better learn Thai pretty quick or you're going to find yourself in a pickle

You can just use the translate apps

Hmm google translate is a wonderful thing, but it's a far cry from actually having a conversation.

I'm a bit of a polyglot, I speak English, Spanish, my native languages, then Mandarin, Thai and Lao as my learned languages, plus a little bit of terrible French

I've tried the translate app for languages I don't speak. They work OK but a far cry from actually having a conversation

Thailand was told due to uncertain times, enviromental impacts, wars, pandemic to make sure they diversified their economy, and not rely soley on tourism.

They've done nothing.

The whole country is addicted to cheap mass tourism. They haven't even done anything in regards to attracting quality tourism.

The new goverment has become fixated on an arbitary number, and basically opened up the country to the world with no visa restrictions.

They have done NOTHING to attract tourists but PLEASE don't get me off topic we are talking about Thailand

But as I said the Philippines has potential for tourism but as I said can you stop getting me off topic please !
