Most Complained-About UK TV Moment of the Year: Julia Brewer & Palestinian Politician

A fiery exchange between TalkTV presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer and Palestinian politician Mustafa Barghouti has been revealed as the most complained-about television event of the year, according to media regulator Ofcom. The interview, which delved into the contentious Hamas-Israel war, garnered an astonishing 17,366 complaints, almost doubling the highest number of complaints recorded for a single programme last year.

During the interview, Hartley-Brewer clashed with Barghouti, the general secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative. Tensions escalated as the presenter accused Barghouti of interrupting her repeatedly, asserting, “Maybe you’re not used to women talking.” This comment in particular drew significant backlash from viewers, fueling the volume of complaints submitted to Ofcom.

 

By comparison, last year’s most complained-about moment involved Laurence Fox, who made widely criticized "misogynistic comments" about female journalist Ava Evans. That incident received 8,867 complaints, significantly fewer than the controversy surrounding Hartley-Brewer’s TalkTV segment.

 

It is noteworthy that complaints directed at the BBC are not included in Ofcom’s figures, as the corporation handles such matters independently. The volume of complaints highlights the divisive nature of certain media discussions, particularly those centered on sensitive global issues.

I think that she may have come close to dropping a few F bombs and I admire the fact that she didn't.
I laughed when she said about women talking.

She deserves an award.

I’m obviously not missing much by not watching in Talk TV, although Barghouti‘s final statement nailed it, and despite being harangued by a ranting woman.

You watched the video? So after having only 20 seconds left of the segment because he would not let her finish her sentence, she asks him what would be an acceptable reaction from Israel (after the Oct 7th atrocity).

It’s a shame the OP doesn’t provide a breakdown of the complaints to for and against presenter/guest.

 

I’m sure there’s at least a someone who might find the presenter’s ranting acceptable and there’s always those automatically offended by any Palestinian being given the opportunity to express their point of view.

I'm actually quite surprised that 17366 supporters of a Palestinian politician were watching and listening to Julia Hartley -Brewer broadcasting!

 

Like Heineken, Talk TV/Radio must reach into corners others don't!

Because the number of complaints against the BBC's woke/left wing bias would be off the scale.

They'd have to create a new quango (probably called F... Ofcom) to get rid of them.

Not a fan of Hartley-Brewer but I happened to be watching this exchange on Talk TV. Brewer gabbles a lot, and regularly talks across her guests. In this case, however, she was entirely right in trying to stop Barghouti's interruptions which appeared to be aimed at avoiding answering pointed questions about palestinians launching daily missile attacks into Israel.
