Been drinking a little but gave this post some disjointed thought. The cost of locking them up for 20 years would be excessive and they would probably exit prison as a worse person when they entered.  Why not just chop off the hand of the kid that used the knife and the thumbs of the accomplices? Little cost and definitely a deterrent.

This is by far,  the best post with a practical solution...

Furthermore, if the scum who cut the old man is right handed, then that's the one to chop off! And use the actul Machette they were carrying! In fact to make thing more interesting have one of the gang members do it and then he saves his thumb!

Bring back the old Roman military rules of "Decimation"  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimation_(punishment)

The attack escalated unintentionally when the knife's sheath slipped off, causing the blade to injure the victim.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha.  I've got a bridge over the River Kwai that I'm selling cheap.

Police have vowed to ensure justice for the victim

The police will ensure that the victim pays his 300,000 THB hospital bill (more or less) before he is allowed to leave Thailand you mean?  I doubt the kiddies or their parents will be handed the bill.

Saudi style punishment, that's a concept I'm not ultimately opposed to it, but it does feel rather barbaric.

Perhaps there are other alternatives, one would think that Thailand could create some sort of penal colony on an island somewhere where these people are forced into 70 hours a week of labor. Make them productive for society somehow.

Tried that in California at the prisons but I'm pretty sure it was considered unconstitutional or something of that sort.  Forced labor equals slavery was the argument.

Just wondering if Buddhism and all the fake polite words that are used ad nauseam, could be part of a solution, or more so part of the problem in this culture...

There is an issue around the idea of being able to do bad deeds, but then go to the temple, give some food to a monk, pay to let a bird out of a cage, and all is right with the world.

But, people tend to be less violent in Buddhist countries, certainly in Thailand, so it doesn't quite add up.

The research found that the most significant forms of violence in Thai society include suicide, domestic violence, violence against children, women, and elders, violence from criminal acts, violence involving firearms, violence committed by juveniles, and violence related to terrorism. The causes of violence in Thai society include issues related to broken families, the portrayal of violence by the media, the prevalence of alcohol, drugs, and firearms, economic problems, and the acceptance of the use of violence as a norm.

I see a lot more violence here than in my home country. A Christian one.

But certainly, Buddhist countries do not commit crimes in the name of a religion. Buddhism not being a religion. No hero to defend here, so no crimes done in the name of the beliefs here.

And not inclined to invade other countries to impose a belief system, as it was before for Christianity, and as it is NOW for Islam. There was belligerence between Thais and Cambodia, settled in Siem Reap.

But never seen so many violence towards GF's, against students from other schools... And some warnings not to even give a bad look at a Thai man.

The culture of Wai, that makes children less than the adults, might very well explain a child mind in an adult man. If something happens, there is a reason. Might be this one...

Maybe the same laws won't apply in Thailand, after all this place is infinitely less woke, thankfully.

Dismemberment, forced labor, whatever it takes to keep those gangsters straight. Put some fear in into the minds of the vermin.

I'm certainly not defending their actions. Rather, the underlying issue is what other choices do they have? What upward mobility opportunities are afforded to ANY youth? I think about this frequently, looking at my students and wondering what they will do after graduation. My students are largely middle class. No parents dropping their kids off in BMW's, and it appears many parents are barely able to afford sending them to a private school.

Poverty is a man-made construct, and until that is remedied, you will have frustrated youth doing whatever they can to get "ahead," and Thailand doesn't have a monopoly on this problem.
