American on Dirt Bike Kills Thai Woman Crossing Road in Chiang Mai

That would depend on where she was crossing the road.

At a crosswalk when the lights are on red then yes, that is correct.

But as of yet we don't know where she attempted to cross. Pedestrians have no rights at all on main roads unless they use the designated crossings.

You still have to be alert on the crossings as many drivers still don't recognize them.

Why do so many people blame the driver for the death of the pedestrian? What's the legal speed limit on that road. 50 km/h ? Just assume he was driving with that speed and the old lady crossed the road without looking for traffic (as many people do here btw), the collision can be fatal as well. So without further evidence from witnesses or camera footage it's easy to blame the driver for no reason....

Thai people often play "frogger" crossing the road and inch out slowly and wait until the vehicle passes them. This can really confuse tourists that don't know if they're going to fully cross or not so they swerve around trying to avoid each other.

I almost hit a person once years ago because I didn't understand this. Eventually I ended up totally stopping in the middle of the road and the guy was so confused as to why I didn't just keep going.

And yet here you are, just last week saying this:

"Because here, whether legal or not, vehicles have the right-of-way not pedestrians, if you don’t obey by that “rule” your likelihood to get flattened greatly increases."

That reply from you was copied and pasted from my thread that I started after I was nearly knocked down by a Thai motorbike driver who was driving on the sidewalk.......

Anything to say in your defense?

If he has then he will probably reverse it next week 🤣🤣🤣

Was the lady using a zebra crossing ? Did she step in front of the m/c ? .. Was she in a hurry to dine ?  What speed was the rider doing ?

Dont ask questions its more entertaining to watch diatribes based on ignorance.

We don't know the details of this tragic accident and should make no assumptions about what actually happened. She could have blindly walked right in front of his motorbike without looking giving him no chance to evade. Let CCTV tell us what really happened here.

Very unlikely there's any video evidence unless it was  a security camera on a home. They didn't say where exactly this happened but you can kind of see from the picture it was a small 2 lane road.

Here's a random but representative road in Mae On district. As seen on the map this is a very rural area next to the mountains. These dirt bikes amongst others love speeding through the little villages on their day trips. The victim could have been some elderly women who isn't prepared to deal with high speed traffic.

The one thing we DO know is that you should always be respectful and never drive fast in residential zones until you're out on the open road. Even if  you hit someone and it was their fault the Thais likely won't care and expect you to watch out for others, regardless of what they do.

Look how they live right on the side of the road. They step one foot outside and they're on the road. It's an accident waiting to happen so be careful.

An American riding a dirt bike struck and killed a Thai woman crossing the road in Mae On District, Chiang Mai. Tearfully, the tourist knelt to apologise to the victim’s family at the scene.

Showing remorse should help.  I wish the concept of "restorative justice" were implemented more widely.  If ever there was a case for it, this is it.

He was lucky that he didn't face mob lynch after accidentally killing a local because of own carelessness.

Was it because he quickly showed his remorse to victim's family?

Or was it in Chiang Mai often known for its generally gentle population?

Any chance of different story in Pattaya or Phuket in the similar situation?

Without a vid to watch, lot of assuming going on.

One strike against the dirt bike guy, as he probably shouldn't have even been on the road.   So the fault is squarely on him, before even considering if the lady put herself in harm's way.

One thing for sure, it's going to cost a lot of money to avoid jail time, as it should.

At 38, you'd think one would be respectfully of the laws when playing tourist in foreign country.  Why they have laws to begin with.

Dirt bike or dual sport?

If I had a nickel for all the assumptions I hear on this forum I could run against Trump in the next election. He may have been driving straight, at a normal speed, and the woman could have walked across the road without looking, which I see daily here all the years I've lived here. The only evidence that could judge this is CCTV. They're quick to decide against foreigners regarding traffic incidents here, which is prejudiced thinking before any evidence is there.

Sorry for this accident, but here in Pattaya, far too many farangs race their motorcycles at very high speeds without any consideration. What's more, the vehicles are often rigged and make a hellish noise. I would pay a lot of money out of my own pocket to support the police in taking action against these hooligans. No mercy!

Well said, that man! Couldn't agree more.

Don't 99% Of them act that way ??

The majority of the Thai ones yes, but ( unless you've not noticed ) this is a farang.

Hey, the women was walking and he was riding a machine. What about that don’t you understand? Apply some wisdom. Pedestrians have the right-of-way where we come from and here as well.

She was crossing the road to get to a restaurant.  Likely many cars parked along the roadside, with so many eating out during the holidays.

Assume she darted out from between two massive SUV's without looking, giving the VICTIM on the bike less than a fraction of a second to react.

You can be shirley if he were speeding or actin' a fool on his bike, there would be quotes from witnesses.

But police have swung into action and indicated they will charge him to the full extent of the innocent man's credit line.

It's amazing how quickly the RTP can charge a farang with these types of crimes, yet when a Thai commits them it's just business as usual..

Is it?  Doubtless you've got specific examples to justify that nonsense?
