Chiang Mai to join UNESCO’s World Heritage list

Chiang Mai—the historical heart of the Lanna Kingdom—is finalizing its bid to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Officials aim to include renowned spots like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Wat Chedi Luang, and the ancient city walls in their proposal. Already on UNESCO’s tentative list since 2015, Chiang Mai hopes to join Thailand’s five existing World Heritage sites. If approved, the designation would boost global recognition, preservation efforts, and tourism for the city’s rich cultural heritage.
