Britain hasn't agreed to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius - some 'morons' in the government, bereft of an iota of intelligence or knowledge of history have decided to 'return' the islands to Mauritius, even though Mauritius has never actually owned them.

 

Let's hope Trump can suitably embarrass (nay threaten!)  the UK and that idiot Lammy to cancel the deal.

 

Mauritius should play no part in any deal - it's nothing to do with them.

 

The only people who have reason to feel wronged are the Chagosians, which the UK treated very badly when Diego Garcia was established as a military base.

 

We should retain ownership of the islands, and create a more secure and long-term lease for the military base, (ie get the yanks to pay a decent amount for leasing the base).

 

We should then use that money (and additional) to allow the Chagosians to return and live on the other islands in the archipeligo, and we (UK and USA) should fund the building of decent hospitals, schools and supporting infrastructure.

Lots of claims were made, by both leave and remain parties. Promises? Not really. Show me any pledges actually made that could be deemed accountable?

 

Impossible for anyone to know who would be able to deliver what, until the post referendum government and leadership was confirmed. Unfortunately, we ended up with May for the next 3 years, who got precisely nowhere with a bloody-minded EU, that showed its bad faith so much that I'm even more glad were out (sort of).

The UK exported £356 billion of goods and services to the EU in 2023. 42% of all UK exports were to the EU. If the EU would die, which is unlikely to happen, we'll die together.🤗

The UK didn't just take this decision on a mere whim. This is because of an International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision that mandated the return the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius. 

 

The ICJ ruling states (in part) as follows:

It's not Mauritius but the Maldives that may have a claim to the Chagos Is. but there was no Maldivian claim nor settlement recorded,

 

Portugal was the first European country to discover the Chagos but the French were the first European colonial power to lay claim to them. The French administered the islands from Mauritius and settled the forebears of the Chagos Islanders. Control of both Mauritius and the Chagos Islands was assumed by Great Britain from the French and confirmed by treaty after the last Napoleonic War in1815. The Chagos Is. were governed by the British from Mauritius, which was by that time also a British colony. But the (Creole) people were already on the Chagos Islands.

 

If Britain should be dealing with and compensating anyone, it should be the Chagos Islanders themselves.

 

The Diego Garcia base is a very important military asset and should not be given away, least of all to Mauritius.
