If the police took their work seriously, they could simply set up dragnets on those streets, and impose a stiff fine and confiscate the bikes for a month. Word would get around and the problem would be solved. 

 

People can be thick, but not entirely unteachable. There has to be a deterrent. It is a weird concept known as law enforcement.

There is no rule that the sign has to be round. The principle is that is a blue background with an arrow indicating the direction.

I'll solve the problem quickly and cheaply.

One way road spikes

You travel the wrong direction it punctures your tire.

Very effective, one time and they learn, especially pushing the bike to the tire shop

Additionally setup a video camera or post clips of idiots ruining their tires.

Thais would find a way to avoid the spikes as they do with the speed bumps. They drive on the side walks or even remove part of the speed bump.

I am sure they would find a way to block the spikes in the retracted position.

Best solution is to seize the vehicle or motorbike. The proceeds would finance the police (which would motivate the police).

I know police has the following argument: if you seize the vehicle people would not be able to go to work and kids would not go to school.

So what is the solution when people don’t respect traffic lights, stop signs, railway crossings red light blinking and thousand others infractions. The same is true with construction site safety rules, lack of administrative enforcement, court rulings never enforced, etc…

Thailand like many other countries shows signs of failed state.

Ah yes indeed. In which case riders will take it as information and not an instruction and ignore it accordingly.

I've always found it amusing that foreigners living for extended periods of time in Thailand can't grasp the reality that the traffic laws are for the movement of cars and commercial vehicles in a more or less orderly manner and that there is an alternate unwritten tacit cultural traffic code for smaller motorscooters that most Thais understand and employ for great ease and efficiency of transportation. 

   Having come from a Western tight arse overly regulated nation myself like many on this forum it truly is liberating to adopt the local trafic code and arrive at ones destination on a scooter while those in a car haven't got through the first traffic light on their precious one way street.  Just sayin.

Soi 5 Jomtien is one way also. Doesn’t stop cars and motorcycles heading up to 2nd road contrary to the one way regulations. Lack of policing is to blame. ie nobody seems to care.

Doesn't matter What system they have /want to have, They Travel whatever way they want doesn't matter a One way street or an Highway .

Thay will Never fix this problem If they Let the cops Do the Same and not uphold the Law .
