Apart from a strong Chinese Thai community and many Thais being part Chinese, Thais celebrate just about everything. Any excuse for a party, spending money getting gifts. You could ask why do they celebrate Christmas.

Yes when looking at GDP by output but I think GDP by per capita shows a better view on how that wealth is distributed, you will then find the USA is not the richest country in the world.
