NYC Catholic School Teacher Resigns After Heated Anti-Trump Rant at Student

A teacher at Monsignor Farrell High School, an all-boys Catholic institution on Staten Island, resigned after launching into an explosive anti-Trump tirade during class, which culminated in him insulting a student in a now-leaked audio recording.  

 

The incident, which took place last Wednesday, was secretly recorded by a student and later shared with the media. In the clip, the teacher passionately criticized former President Donald Trump, particularly his decision to release billions of gallons of water in California to combat wildfires.

 

He also labeled Trump a dictator and harshly condemned the Republican Party. The school administration was made aware of the outburst, placed the teacher on leave, and later accepted his resignation. Monsignor Farrell High School and the Archdiocese of New York declined to comment on the matter.  

 

The outburst was reportedly triggered when a student brought up politics in class. Acknowledging that discussing politics was outside his role as an educator, the teacher nevertheless proceeded with his rant. “I’m sorry to the rest of you. It’s not my job. I’m not even supposed to do it, but I’m hoping to make some sense to somebody,” he said. In an apparent moment of frustration, he also exclaimed, “Jesus Christ,” taking the Lord’s name in vain—a particularly controversial remark at a Catholic school.  

 

 

As he continued, his anger intensified. “You guys will be able to vote next time around. If you vote Republican, you’re bringing us all down,” he told the students, passionately arguing that the Republican Party did not adhere to the values it claimed to uphold.  

 

His frustration then shifted toward one particular student, with whom he seemed to have a prior relationship. His anger boiled over when the student responded to his rant with a smile. “I’m not kidding when I say, ‘Wipe that smile off your face.’ Detention, I just wrote you a referral mentally. You’re going to detention for bringing up politics in class,” he yelled.  

 

The student attempted to de-escalate the situation, urging the teacher to control himself. However, this only further fueled the teacher’s fury. “Excuse me?! Excuse me?!” he screamed.  

 

“You wanna go for two?” he threatened, as his frustration spiraled into personal attacks. “After all I put up with you for the last two years? And talked you up! And stood your back when they threatened you!” he shouted.  

 

The heated exchange reached an unsettling climax when the teacher made a particularly cruel remark. “If I could take back your letter of recommendation to college right now, I would,” he snapped. “You talk to me like that? After everything that I’ve done for you?!”

 

At the height of his outburst, the teacher withdrew the detention but issued a final warning: “Don’t ever talk to me again personally.” He further threatened that if the student ever spoke out in class again without raising his hand, he would be given a week’s worth of detention.  

 

“You got your letter, so now everything’s good, right? You got your high grade on the midterm, so everything’s good? Now you can treat me like that?” he ranted before concluding with an expletive, calling the student a “punk a–.”  

 

Following the incident, Monsignor Farrell High School took immediate action, placing the teacher on leave the next day. He later submitted his resignation, according to a statement obtained by “Libs of TikTok.”

Oh please. Somehow I knew I would find your Anti-Trump rant involved in this Op. As i was reading it I could not help but think how the Dems far-left and the Trump haters would twist this into a political bias rant. 

This is not about Trump. The teacher lost it in class and used his own personal beliefs and rhetoric to the class rather than asking the boy to sit down and be quiet. Why are you not commenting about the teacher cursing "Jesus F-ing Christ" ? Trump did not disenfranchise anything. Biden began doing that years ago with distrust in the governmental and judicial agencies. 

This teacher was dead to rights wrong in his retort. Resignation was too easy for him. He should have been terminated and banned from teaching elsewhere.

free speech is allowed. But schools have rules just as in Thailand you are not permitted to give your opinions on the king or religion if you are a teacher. There is a lot of debate about what can or cannot be taught in school. I personally liked to challenge teachers while at school. Evil me. However, some schools are actively trying to break the constitution when it comes to religion in school.

 

Oklahoma's State Superintendent Ryan Walters issued a directive requiring schools to incorporate the Bible, specifically the King James Bible, into classroom lessons. Usually, the Satanists would sue for the same rights (to teach the Christians a lesson in equanimity) but they are slow to act this time. North Dakota is about to make it compulsory for schools to teach intelligent design in science classes. There is no evidence to prove intelligent design scientific, so science teachers would be forced to lie.

 

In politics or religion, there will be several sides to every argument and shouting or threatening weakens any argument. Perhaps setting up formal debates to take up differing opinions and argue them with facts would help develop critical thinking. However, this would be unusual in a strictly Christian school I suppose, where disagreement would be anathema to the Christians.

I've found that it's more often those of the rightish/Trumpian variety that make this mistake but it's surprisingly common: the notion that the 1st Amendment means you get to say anything you want anywhere you want at any time is just silly. Such a right does not exist and if you think about if for a moment it's easy to see how true that is and how it couldn't be any other way.

 

The 1st Amendment prevents - in many but not all circumstances - the government from prohibiting your free speech or punishing you for it. That's it. It doesn't, for example, mean you get to say whatever you want at work and face no repercussions.

 

I probably agree with that teacher in almost every way, but he was unprofessional and in violation of a reasonable policy that he is obligated to conform to if he takes a paycheck.

There's nothing in the constitution that prohibits teaching the Bible in school. 1st schools ever built in the US taught a bible lesson along with the basics.

We proudly sang the national anthem and the pledge of allegiance was stood for and repeated before roll was taken every morning. (at school)

 

As for your hokey comments on Intelligent Design: All people who believe in intelligent design may or may not be creationists. But all people who believe in intelligent design are not creationists. (Freud) believed in an intelligent design, Einstein believed in an intelligent design, and Charles Darwin believed in intelligent design.

Kind of hard to teach science without exploring the beliefs of Freud, Einstein and Darwin.

Teachers are to be held to a certain standard and conduct when in the classroom.

 

This teacher was way out of line and has no business being in a class teaching anyone conducting himself in such a manner.
