Should I move to Nha Trang?

I was originally planning to move to Koh Chang (Thailand) when I retire at the end of this year, but after monitoring the air quality there for the last few months (which was mostly not good) I’ve been having second thoughts.

 

So now I’m exploring other options, one of which is Nha Trang. The air quality, for starters, seems to be a lot better there than in most of Thailand. Now I would like to know a few things about living in Nha Trang.

 

* What kind of visa would I need? I am Dutch, by the way.

* What’s the cost of living? I’m single, not much of a drinker or party-goer or anything like that. A one or two bedroom apartment would be quite okay for me, doesn’t have to be centrally located.

* Is there a good hospital in Nha Trang? 
* Is health insurance compulsive? Or recommended? 
* Are there any good supermarkets in Nha Trang that sell western food, like peanut butter, pasta, stuff like that?

 

I’m just trying to gather as much information as possible, so anything you can offer will be very welcome.

There are several websites that report the air quality of places all over the world, including Koh Chang.

So it was a desk top review  -  you haven't actually been there and experienced it?

I have only visited Nha Trang so will not be any help with your questions but my main concern would be the lack of a retirement visa in Vietnam.  Hope you find a way around having to leave the country every 3 months.

There are no retirement visas to Vietnam.  It's tough to stay longer than 3 months.  Not many foreigners live here permanently.  Most long term foreigners are like me, digital nomads who stay 3 months then move on elsewhere.  

 

Basic western food like peanut butter, pasta is available at supermarkets.  The selection is certainly better than on Koh Chang, but not nearly as good as bangkok, pattaya, etc.

 

Cost of living is similar to Thailand, probably a little cheaper.  It depends on the quality of place you are looking for.

I have been to Chang , but never Nha Trang. I thought Koh Chang was OK for a few days, but could never imagine living there seems like it would get boring very quickly.  Nha Trang from talking with people who have been there, seems more developed and much better suited for a longer stay.  Koh Chang saw too many pothead backpacker poor looking people.
