Thailand Faces Backlash Over Secret Uyghur Deportation to China

Featured Replies

Very sad. Anybody trying to escape persecution in China would be well advised not to come anywhere near Thailand, especially since Thaksin returned and became de facto leader.

On Thailand’s Forced Return of Uyghurs to China
Press Statement
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State

February 27, 2025

We condemn in the strongest possible terms Thailand’s forced return of at least 40 Uyghurs to China, where they lack due process rights and where Uyghurs have faced persecution, forced labor, and torture. As Thailand’s longstanding ally, we are alarmed by this action, which risks running afoul of its international obligations under the UN Convention Against Torture and the International Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. This act runs counter to the Thai people’s longstanding tradition of protection for the most vulnerable and is inconsistent with Thailand’s commitment to protect human rights. We urge all governments in countries where Uyghurs seek protection not to forcibly return ethnic Uyghurs to China.

China, under the direction and control of the Chinese Communist Party, has committed genocide and crimes against humanity targeting predominantly Muslim Uyghurs and other members of ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang. We call on Chinese authorities to provide full access to verify the well-being of the returned Uyghurs on a regular basis. The Thai Government must insist and fully verify continuously that Chinese authorities protect the Uyghurs’ human rights.

Almost in line with the US on the "most shameful and digusting foreign policy" award 😞

And yet Thailand maintains its seat on the UN council for Human Rights... What a joke

Thailand Faces Backlash Over Secret Uyghur Deportation to China.

Their international reputation is that Thailand doesn't take in refugee...period.

If so why didn't they send them  BACK  Straight away after they came to Thailand  .

Why in Satans Name lock them up for 11.   F..n  Years, Now That's stupid ain't it.

Thailand is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention which means they are not legally bound by its provisions regarding refugee protection; this means that Thailand does not have a specific legal framework for protecting refugees within its borders and they may be treated as illegal immigrants if they do not have a valid visa

No legal status for refugees: Due to non-signature, refugees in Thailand lack legal status and can be at risk of arrest and deportation.

But they hold a seat on the UN council for Human Rights... Hypocritical

With friends like this as a government, you don't need enemies anymore.

Reminds me strongly of the 40-45s last century.

I wonder for how long ??

I'm sure the PM will be along shortly to explain her decision to forcibly return these 40 Uyghurs to China.

Troubles on the Myanmar border, the restive south, and Cambodia.

She's in a bit over her head.

Seems that a government should not hide what it is legally allowed to do - unless the government knows that it is sending people to their deaths. Now, the cat is out of the bag. Shame.

"Shame" is too mild a word to use - how about "possible assisted mass homicide"

They must have feared their number was up the moment Thaksin returned from Dubai. The message is, to anyone, anywhere, trying to escape persecution, don't come to Thailand. Sooner or later you will be betrayed by people here who are easily bought off.

I assume that Beijing called in the Thai ambassador for consultation or the Chinese ambassador presented its compliments to the competent Thai authorities on this issue.

Without massive pressure by the red brethren of the North this would not have happened. Thailand could have done so much better as Thailand should decide what happens inside Thailand without "friendly advice" by the real power brokers.

A poor statement by the present government, totally unnecessary but in line with other human rights issue. Remember the Tak Bai incident where they "perished" 70+ in the South of Thailand and the case never reached the bench due to the expiration of limitations of law.

Welcome to Thailand!

Lucky for them they weren't picked up and extraordinarily renditioned to Guantanamo for decades of water boardings and anal probing with broom handles with no trial.

For freedom!

i guess that's because they were not a party to the incineration of 3000 people in New York City.

SHAME on you Thailand!!

You should now be thrown out of the UN Human Rights Council.

If any of your embassies around the World face protests and possible damage, you have only got yourselves to blame.

11 years ago (2014) was when Prayut and his Junta cronies took control in a coup. So the military arrested and locked them up.

I don’t think Thailand really cares about what Human Rights groups around the world think.

And of course they are sucking up to China in preference to the USA. Why wouldn’t they? They obviously think China will be a stable and advantageous ally in many different ways and we all know how the USA treats its allies. It’s a no brainer that Thailand would prefer to be in China’s orbit.

Blah blah blah. I can just picture Rubio being asked “ shall we send the strongly condemn letter?”

No I mean China’s orbit. It’s obvious that legally Thailand is recognized as an independent country, as opposed to, say, Taiwan.

Claiming that Thailand is a 35th province of China is like claiming the UK is a State of the USA. It’s not, it is simply in its orbit and mostly follows what the super power country wants.

The Chinese government wanted the Thai authorities to cut off public utilities, such as electricity, water supply, and internet signals, used by call center gangs operating on the Myanmar side.

If they'd dropped a nukular bomb on a city and incinerated 100,000 civilians, they'd get a medal and a memorial wing at the Smithsonian.

What it's saying is that one small faction of that group has been funded by USAID, or three-letter agencies, to commit terrorist acts in China.

China orders music and Thailand plays

I can reaffirm that the 40 Uyghurs chose to return home willingly and that the Thai government has complied with human rights principles and international practices, adding that no country had agreed to accept them for resettlement,"
