A 23-year-old Myanmar man has confessed to killing a woman over an unpaid debt of 5,000 baht before disposing of her body in a roadside thicket in Wang Noi, Ayutthaya province.

 

Police were alerted late on 9 March after a local resident discovered an abandoned blue-and-white motorcycle submerged in an irrigation canal in Lam Ta Sao subdistrict. The bike was registered to a Myanmar factory worker, 30-year-old Ms. Zaza, who had been reported missing. Investigators learned she had last been seen with her close acquaintance, Mr. Pai Aung Chit.

 

Under questioning, Mr. Pai Aung Chit admitted to stabbing Ms. Zaza to death and discarding her body in a nearby overgrown area. He later led police and forensic officers to the site, where her body was found with five stab wounds.

 

The suspect claimed they had been in a relationship for about a month, during which Ms. Zaza had borrowed 5,000 baht from him. On the night of the murder, she arranged to meet him, leading him to believe she would return the money. However, an argument ensued, during which she allegedly took his phone, deleted its contents, and smashed it.

 

According to his statement, she then grabbed a knife he had been carrying, and in the ensuing struggle, he managed to wrest it from her. He claimed she bit his hand, prompting him to stab her multiple times before dragging her body into the undergrowth, holding her underwater, and later dumping her motorcycle in the canal. He then returned to work as if nothing had happened.

 

Despite the confession, Ayutthaya police chief Pol. Col. Somjet Maenbut expressed doubts about the suspect’s account. Investigators noted inconsistencies, particularly as Ms. Zaza was known to be a diligent worker who had recently purchased three new mobile phones for colleagues to pay off in instalments. She was also reported to have been carrying 2,000 baht in cash at the time of her disappearance.

 

The investigation remains ongoing as police examine further evidence to establish the full circumstances of the crime.
