Putin Calls for Significant Revisions to U.S. Ceasefire Plan for Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin stated on Thursday that Russia was open to a U.S.-proposed ceasefire in Ukraine but emphasized that any agreement must address the fundamental causes of the conflict and resolve numerous critical details. While his remarks signaled a willingness to engage in discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump, the extensive conditions he outlined suggested that an immediate ceasefire was unlikely.

"We agree with the proposals to cease hostilities," Putin told reporters at the Kremlin after meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. "The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it." However, he stressed that any cessation of fighting must lead to lasting peace and tackle the root issues behind the ongoing war.

He detailed a range of points requiring further clarification and expressed appreciation for Trump’s peace efforts. Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, has been actively pushing for a resolution. Both the U.S. and Russia now describe the war as a proxy battle that risked escalating into a much broader global conflict.

Trump, indicating his willingness to discuss the matter directly with Putin, called the Russian leader’s statement "very promising" and expressed hope that Moscow would "do the right thing." He pointed to his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who has been engaged in serious discussions with Russian officials in Moscow regarding the U.S. proposal, which Ukraine has already agreed to. The outcome of those talks, according to Trump, would reveal Russia’s true stance. "Now we're going to see whether or not Russia is there, and if they're not, it'll be a very disappointing moment for the world," Trump said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, however, remained skeptical of Putin’s approach. He suggested that the Russian leader was hesitant to outright reject the ceasefire proposal due to pressure from Trump. "That's why in Moscow they are imposing upon the idea of a ceasefire these conditions, so that nothing happens at all, or so that it cannot happen for as long as possible," Zelenskiy remarked in his nightly video address.

While the possibility of a ceasefire remains on the table, Putin’s insistence on significant revisions casts doubt on any immediate resolution to the war. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether diplomatic efforts can bridge the divide or if hostilities will persist.

The fundamental cause is Putin wanted to turn Ukraine into a vassal state.

The root cause is YOU and your nation’s imperialistic bent!

The bloke is a deviant and will want all sorts of concessions. Ukraine will lose lose lose.

Imo the worst that can happen is we all yield to Putin in the drive for peace, they mobilise and become strong again, then they do what they want, again. That idiot in the White House is in a good position to grind this out and bring Russia to its knees, having that little urchin eviscerated from inside, ending one of the biggest threats to the world.
There is no negotiating with them. They are a despicable bunch that care not one jot for anybody. Guess you could say that about a few countries today.

A stalling tactic. Let's see what happens after the Kursk salient has completely collapsed.

Putin won't agree to a ceasefire without knowing the terms/demands for an eventual treaty. Strategically, he'd be a fool to do so. A ceasefire would allow Ukraine to build up their weapons stockpiles, reinforce their supply chains, and rest and relocate their troops. A ceasefire offers no benefit to Russia, other than a reduced death toll.

Who would agree to back off so the enemy can become stronger, with not even a vague idea of what the eventual deal would look like?
