Although i can understand to a certain degree maybe not liking Phuket because of the overcrowding during high season.  To not like somewhere in Thailand because none of the staff were from Thailand is a bit of a strange thing to pick out. Even if the staff were Thai most of them probably wouldn't be actually from Phuket So, I don't see how  where the staff come from is relevant to liking or disliking somewhere.

Nah man like I said I love Phuket I lived here for a couple of years nearly 20 years ago, purely observations and nothing against any nationalities mentioned at all, I just noticed a huge change haven't been here for a few years I live in a completely different part of Thailand.
Definitely very busy but that is one thing I do like, met some very cool people on holiday here over the last week.

Yep, lots of Thailand is not the same. I'm so glad I arrived decades ago, to see the proper Thailand.    Pattaya same definitely not Thailand, too many foreigners. Sadly, it's not the p

Rubbish. There are loads of places in Thailand that are nice to live in.

  • And 10-20 years from now, those that are arriving now will write a post somewhere complaining that Phuket is not the same as it used to be and they will be longing for the good old days in 2025.

For sure and the Russian ladies here are nothing special and charge 10 times more than a beautiful Thai lady, one of the only regular "crack downs" I agree with in Thailand thinning out Russians and Nigerians (@mods not xenophobic in any way I just meant aesthetically pleasing to the eye ladies :))

As soon as they finished the road from airport to Patong, Karon & Kata Beaches, it was done for.   Thankfully I got there right before it was completed, or revamped.  1999 and they still had a couple section just gravel, not quite done yet.

Returned in 2000 and all was done.   Was actually quite nice on the cusp of high season, during school breaks; Mar-Apr-May & Sept-Oct, and visited regularly 2X a year for 10 ish years on.  Stopped for 10 years, then returned, even during high seasons 2020-21-22 and was pure Bliss.  Then 2023, turned to overcrowded, overpriced crap again.  2024, was few kms from Sarasin Bridge, and didn't even bother hopping over to the island.

Praying for the next pandemic ... 🙏

I'm babbling on my own topic now but an analogy would be people like us going to Russia to find a Thai lady has anyone ever done that?  I am sure someone probably has and it wasn't me

@KhunLA hahaha another pandemic (agree was very peaceful!) would definitely thin the crowd, and get a few more Russians back on the front line!

Spent some on Phuket a little over a year ago. Was first there in 1976. No resorts. A few bungalows on the beaches. Beachfront land was 1,000 baht a rai. They could not give it away.

Went back in 1986. Had developed alot. Still very nice. Again in 1993. Far more development. Still amazing. Azure seas. Spectacular women everywhere. Great food.

Did not return until around 2008. It was degraded, for the most part. But, still decent. Good nightlife.

The island now feels like one big garbage heap, people seem to keep on traveling to Phuket but it was such a pale shadow of what it was when I was last previously there 10 years ago. It was absolutely infested with low end Malaysians, Arabs, Indians and especially the spectacularly unpleasant Russians, no thanks I never need to go back.

The traffic was an abomination, everything was overpriced, Bangla Road was utterly horrific with barely an attractive woman in sight, and the entire place just reeked.

No need to ever return. The charm is lost. The over development is stunning. The prices were crazy.

You are soo right! Unfortunately nothing new, as it has been gone for more than 3 years.

No it hasn't, it's still there. Phuket is a large island, 70 km north to south, and it's the real Thailand. Locals here are not overly friendly, but are more honest. Southern mentality I guess.

Patong, Karon, and many popular beaches might indeed feel like paradise lost, but there are many even more beautiful beaches a bit north of the island.

As for the Russians, Indians, Chinese or any other etnicity, avoid them and dont do Walking Street at night.

Hi, I just watched the following video covering the current situation of the Phuket.

It says more than 70% of the condos are now bought by Russians.

They charged you 10 times the price  of a Thai girl? I admire your openess about frequenting prostitutes. Do you realise that a lot of them were trafficked in? Kind of pathetic when you think about it, you must be a proud man.

and  anti-govt rallies flame up, as happened during the previous military regime?

Still fresh in my memory.

In the famous park in Chiang Mai, youth as young as 14-15 joined it.

Tourism shut down means 10 millions lose their jobs.

Civil unrest often comes from the hunger triggered anger, no real links with political ideologies at grass roots level.

I doubt it to be honest, seen how open and honest you were. Russian ladies quoted you 10 times the local price. Isn't that a bit exaggerated?

I never liked Phuket. It always gave off a bad vibe.

Phuket City is basically a slum.

The beaches are terrible.

If you want to grab a taxi you need to take out a mortgage with the local mafia.

Food is terrible and overpriced.

The locals hate the farang and hunt them down with slingshots.

I cannot imagine a worse place to live in Thailand.

You must have a sad life sitting in your igloo in a freezer somewhere with no friends as you don't appear to take the concept of humour or other peoples point of view very well.  Enjoy your seclusion.

You find the topic of human trafficking humorous? Now you're talking! Do you realise how these foreign girls end up here? That's not a pretty picture, and any man, and I mean any man using their services is by definition a loser.

Are you tourist police or something? You probably need to hop back on a plane and head back to wherever you are from as you don't seem to like the things in this country that have been going on longer than before you and I were born.
The only thing I agree with is foreign girls working here probably are trafficked in some way but they don't have to get on that flight to go a few thousand miles away from their own country, slightly off topic but related to the same choices like the Muppets in Koh Samui that think it would be cool to take nearly 300kg of cannabis out of the country for a couple of thousand pounds, sometimes you just can't fix stupid.

Spent 3 months in Phuket as a back packer in 1979 when the journey from Phuket town to Patong was an adventure over tropical hills and Bangla Road was nothing but a little empty dirt road. Went back many times but gave up Phuket 20 years ago and never looked back, just another tourist trap.

When I first went to Phuket I saw a postcard of Karon taken in 1977. The beach was grass down to the sea with buffalos on it. Must've been nice in 1979, if a little daunting.

Yeah for sure @Baht Simpson Karon has changed a lot since I got married here (and promptly divorced) in 2008 the only consistent thing is the police checkpoint at the bottom of the hill from Patong that only seems to stop farang 🤣

This is definitely not Thailand any more

I have been here since 2006.

I have travelled all over Thailand, and it has changed like everywhere else in the world has changed, e.g. people have more choices now than they did back when I 1st came here in 2006, that said, I see that lots of people from all over Thailand returning to their villages after finding out that wages aren't enough to survive on and don't need to support parents who have passed, etc, etc and that for them, living off of the land is much easier and less stressful than working for the "man".

Just look how many farangs having left their home countries to move to Thailand & other places, why, because living back in their home countries is unsustainable as it changed over time.

You not seeing Thai's to talk to as you used to, could have something to do with the above ?

Get all that stuff @4MyEgo for sure.

If you watch that youtube video that another member posted here before factually it is correct, it is Russian money and people driving rent up for all other foreigners and local people, same happens in all major cities like London for example but that is usually by people from the UK, Thailand is allowing this particular nationality to affect the welfare and economy of the Phuket area of Thailand, and also if you check the dates out, you will probably find the majority of the investments will be coming from conscriptable aged Russians since the war started, anyone met a Ukrainian deserter here?

I came back 17 years later, horrible, I stayed one day and Ieft Pukhet, never came back : now I live upcountry, quiet, quiet ( and I  Iike )

What has snowflake to do with this?

What you just quoted me before, can be translate to, I live on an island where I watch out and don´t do things just I want. After that you try to say that Phuket people are honest. You know the bus to the twilight zone?

No, I am not. You were trying to convince the rest of us that people in Phuket are more honest, but maybe not so friendly. That´s just wrong. They are same as in the rest of the country. Moreover, the deeper South you come, the bigger risk for violence.
