Aussie Influencer Calls Out American Over Wombat Snatch

An American woman's ill-considered social media post involving a wombat joey has stirred a frenzy in Australia, ultimately sending her fleeing to Thailand amidst a whirlwind of backlash. The incident, initially shared on TikTok by the woman, Samantha Strable, showcased her attempting to capture a wombat joey, sparking immediate outrage from Australian wildlife enthusiasts and beyond.

In the video, Strable's boyfriend, Louis Sixt, can be seen laughing as the mother wombat frantically chased after them, accentuating the distress of the mother in the encounter. Renowned Melbourne influencer Anthony Voulgaris sharply criticised Strable in front of his half a million followers, igniting a fervent online discourse. He labeled their actions as disdainful and reiterated the importance of respecting wildlife, exclaiming, "This isn't a mistake. You're being a terrible person."

The viral video has prompted thousands of comments, with many viewers expressing empathy for the distressed wombat. Others, however, argue that while the handling of wildlife was improper, the torrent of abuse Strable encountered was disproportionate. Amidst the uproar, Strable maintains her innocence, insisting the joey was unharmed and promptly returned to its mother.

This incident continues to fuel discussions about wildlife preservation and social media's power to ignite social outrage. As Strable grapples with the fallouts of her actions, the event reminds global audiences of the ongoing challenges in balancing human curiosity with the respect and protection of wildlife, reported The Thaiger.

IIRC our PM suggested the American influencer should try her luck with our crocodiles.

Influencer? Who do these people influence? Coming to Thailand? Try taking a monkey away from its mother. That would make a very interesting video. Meanwhile hundreds of men, women and children are being killed every day and people are getting their arses in their hands about a wombat.

Kangaroos and wallabies compete for pasture and water with sheep and cattle. They also damage fences.

They are capable of suspending gestation for years during droughts. When the drought breaks, their populations explode. No risk of them becoming extinct.

Culled kangaroos are not wasted. They go into pet food. Kangaroo fur is the most durable in the world.

OTOH, the northern hairy-nosed wombat is critically endangered, and the southern version is at risk.

I doubt your airhead influencer knew that. Or you, for that matter.

Injustice elsewhere does not  excuse inappropriate cruelty  in Australia.

Your finger pointing ignores  tthe fact that the  people who are most upset over an overt act of cruelty to a young animal are also the people who lead the way on humanitarian activities.

Australia is a civilized nation subject to law. The American  woman takes delight in  publishing photos of herself with various animals killed  for trophies. She knew what she did was wrong and she intentionally tormented the animal for monetary gain. An Australian may be powerless to stop illegal acts in far off  sovereign nations, but they can stop an ignorant American from  flouting Australian  laws for her personal profit.

Gee grumpy.

she cuddled a wombat. Talk about defensive. Having a bad day?

you murder millions of kangaroos.

i think if you asked the kangaroo, they would prefer a cuddle.

A huge difference between a cuddle and a killing.

And I think you mean kangaroo leather not fur.

Sounds like you have a thing for sheep which I hear is quite common down under?

As a Brit I am happy to educate my conviction cousins.

No, I don't mean kangaroo leather, which is no more durable than pigskin or cowhide. I mean kangaroo fur, which is the most dense of any.

The supreme test of any blade for sharpness is whether it can shave kangaroo fur.

I have no convict ancestry.

As an Aussie, I am happy to educate toffee-nosed prats who don't seem to realize the British Empire faded into history after WWII.

Ok if I have to.

Lamb, cows and pork are raised in Australia by farmers and are killed humanely and used for human consumption.

Kangaroos are a wild animals and only 3% is used for food.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

All of it is used for pet food.

99% of kangaroos are shot by professional shooters who are expert marksmen. That's just as humane as being herded into an abbattoir.

I really have to educate you more about your own country.

99% are not shot by professional shooters.

It is legal to poison them also Down Under with 1080 poison.

There is no ‘law’ to prevent female kangaroos from being shot and killed, and sadly mothers are often shot while they have dependent joeys relying on them. When females with joeys are killed, it is recommended that any dependent joeys also be killed.

Depending on the age and size of the joey they can be killed by decapitation (referred to as “cervical dislocation”), a heavy blow to the head (with objects such as rocks or metal poles), or a shot to their head or chest. Despite government recommendations, some joeys manage to escape this fate and face life without the protection their mother provides. This leaves them extremely vulnerable to predation, starvation and exposure. It’s estimated that as many as 440,000 dependent joeys are brutally killed or left to starve by shooters each year

Demonstrating your ignorance yet again.

1080 baiting targets pigs, foxes, dingoes, feral cats, and wild dogs. Kangaroos are not a target species. They are vegetarian.

Now go and sob a little over the lamb or veal you are eating. Talk about a double standard.

I assumed you were American. OK, there are other nationalities who are equally ignorant.

Rabbits are an introduced species, released by bone-head Brits as food for the foxes they brought in, so they could enjoy hunting. As Oscar Wilde said, the unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible.

It's estimated rabbits cost the Australian pastoral industry $206 million per year,  in terms of pasture competition, and land degradation. When one sees a rabbit warren covering 40 acres, it's easy to understand why.

You need to keep up. Calcivirus replaced myxomatosis for rabbit control almost 30 years ago.

Feral cats can grow to twice the size of a domestic cat. I've shot a couple, they will kill anything, even new-born lambs.

Australia is a harsh country, with harsh choices made by those living on the land. If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Kangaroo's were there way, way before the convicts came.

The subject of this thread is the "outrage" over "snatching" one wombat (endangered or not).

It does not compare to the slaughter (justified or not) of kangeroos & feral cats.

I have already explained the breeding pattern of kangaroos. Feral cats are an introduced species, like rabbits, foxes, camels and pigs.

If you are too lazy to read what I have already posted, there's no point in responding further. Goodbye.

Rabbits are too good at digging.

Americans drove the bison to near extinction. They succeeded with the passenger pigeon.

The ironic situation in oz is that on their coat of arms they feature two animals both of whom can be culled and consumed. I think that would be unique.

To the contributor who highlighted the reference to the vote held to see wether Aust. would become a republic. This was totally basterdised by an Aust. PM who was a royalist and included in the proposed legislation that the Aust MP's would choose the Aust President and that was unacceptable to the aussie voter and why Aust. today is still in the commonwealth. Unfortunate.
