A fierce gun battle erupted in the forests of Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai, as military forces engaged a group of drug traffickers attempting to smuggle narcotics across the northern border. The clash resulted in the deaths of two traffickers and the seizure of a significant quantity of illegal drugs, including 280,000 methamphetamine pills and 4.8 kilograms of raw opium.

In response to the government’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking, the Border Drug Suppression Task Force (NBY35), in coordination with Pha Muang Force and paramilitary rangers, launched a surveillance mission following intelligence reports of an imminent drug shipment from a neighbouring country. The operation took place near Ban Pa Lo, Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai.

At approximately 19:00 on 20 March, military patrol units spotted a group of four to five individuals moving along a forested route believed to be a drug smuggling corridor. The officers ordered the suspects to halt and lay down their backpacks for inspection. However, instead of complying, the traffickers opened fire, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire.

The confrontation lasted two exchanges of gunfire, each spanning 15 minutes, as the traffickers, armed and prepared for combat, fought back against the security forces. Following the clash, two traffickers were found dead at the scene. The remaining individuals managed to flee under the cover of darkness.

Military personnel secured the area overnight before conducting a thorough search at daybreak. The Pha Muang Force deployed reinforcements, including three additional operational teams, to support the search and secure the perimeter.

Upon inspection, officers discovered two backpacks containing:

• 280,000 methamphetamine pills

• 3 blocks of raw opium, each weighing 1.6 kg, totalling 4.8 kg

The deceased individuals were identified as foreign nationals believed to be members of a transnational drug syndicate. Their bodies, along with the seized drugs, were handed over to the authorities for further investigation.

The operation was overseen by Major General Kidakorn Jantra, Commander of the Pha Muang Force, with Colonel Meechai Nilsat, Deputy Commander of the Pha Muang Force, present at the scene. A press briefing was later held, attended by representatives from the Mae Ai district administration, Border Patrol Police Unit 334, Narcotics Suppression Officers from Fang, local defence volunteers, and medical staff from Mae Ai Hospital.

Officials praised the swift action of the military units, highlighting the operation as a significant success in Thailand’s ongoing battle against drug smuggling networks operating along the northern border.

The seized narcotics and case evidence have been handed over to narcotics suppression officers for further legal proceedings. Authorities continue to pursue the remaining suspects who escaped the scene.
