Bangkok Shop Owner Defends Right to Sell Controversial Shirts

Recommended Posts

They can sell what they want, but it shows the low education and knowledge of the shopkeeper.. Maybe he can sell T shirts with yellow Judenstars and Nazi symbols too... I think nobody will buy them surely no Europeans. Suppose you walk on the street in a T shirt like that.... Anyway lack of knowledge again..

maybe the tourists would wear shirts like better vaping than smoking... Or water is not even good in my shoes so I drink alcohol... Watch what will happen here in Thailand

lets be honest, most thais have no idea what the shirts represent or what they say in english, brings back the memory of the girl with the BJ t shirt not realizing what it meant till someone told her, she replaced it very fast. Not that long ago they were in to hitler, its a thai thing, the only time they get offended is if buddha is involved otherwise its all fair game.

in the UK i think you may be arrested for certain teeshirts
most airlines if greeted with that may refuse to let you fly unless you change
Thai authorities may not let you in the country if you show up wearing a depiction of Buddha on a tee shirt
The Company Brandname SURE was told to stop selling such in Thailand.

The shopkeeper may be illiterate (MAYBE) not deflamation.

Teens wearing Nazi teeshirts just think its trendy they have no knowledge

HISTORY becomes more irrellevant as time passes

Quite true, most Thai's claim ignorance to WW2, ask them about the Japanese invasion, it never happened.

Sad how history is taught here

No, the comparison is valid.

She has the right to sell what she wants in her country.

Nobody is forced to buy them.

If the guy being pushed out of the shop is so upset, he has 2 choices.

1 He can buy them all and do what he wants with them.

2 He can simply walk on by and ignore the shirts, the shop and the owner.

What he does NOT have the right to do. is to tell the owner what she can or cannot sell.

He doesn’t have the right to tell the owner what she can or cannot sell but he also has the perfect right to tell her that he finds the products she sells objectionable.

For the Shop Owner:

Not Buddhist

Not Business ethics

Ignorant and insensitive - who cares?

People buy, therefore we sell!

Its the MONEY!

Money is the determining factor in all we do!

Offended by shirts. How sad.

Not about shirts - you silly little man.

About advertising yourself as supporting Putin and Hitler - genocidal maniacs - as if they are worth being proud of!

Buy one and take a photo and show it as your ID on here and let's see the reactions!

I wonder if she is willing to selling negative monarchy shirts? Why not?

Probably because she understands the penalties involved and realises that the majority of her customers are Thai and not farangs.

She also seems to have more common sense than you.

Why don't you go into the business of selling negative monarchy shirts? You probably won't find a supplier to sell you the shirts in the first place, nor will you find many buyers. Why not try it and see how you get on?

If this had happened in my home country, the USA, up until about three months ago, nothing would have prevented it. This is an act of free speech. Now, however, under Trump's presidency, doing this very well might be prohibited and result in a jail term or deportation. 😞

What will Trump prohibit?   Wearing of a T shirt with putin and hitler on it?  Why what might happen next?   Banning T shirts with che gavera's  picture on it?  (something I have seen in both U.S. and Thailand).

Wouldn't allowing T shirt's with putin's and hitler's pictures on them, be something that the left would claim Trump would do?  Doesn't the left claim that Trump is putin's lapdog and wearing a picture of putin would support Trump's lapdogginess?

You know that Trump would not ban them, because, as you say, it is free speech.  Stupid free speech, but free speech non the less.

You are just spreading more "misinformation" as the left is wont to claim.

Typical insult reply suggests a lack of self-control!

Nothing to do with politics - I am neither lefty or righty

But I am interested in Fairness and Justice

As a Trumper you are not interested in such matters as all of your comments clearly demonstrate

But objectionable to whom?

1 particular tourist or to the majority of people?

Trump would prohibit any speech he disagrees with. An example is the support of Palestinians and criticism of Israel.

T-shirts with pictures of Putin, Hitler, George Washington, or Jesus are all the same. They are free speech. They should not be censored.

The left, like me, is not spreading "misinformation." The left, like me, is just expressing their opinions. If you disagree with these, you claim they are lies. They are not. They are valid opinions that probably go against your beliefs. I believe in free speech to the extreme, as long as it is not a direct incitement to violence. The old example is falsely "yelling 'Fire!' in a crowded theater. But you could do that if there were a fire, or even if you legitimately thought there was.

Here we are again. A non-political OP about Thailand and you have to come up with a rant about Pres. Trump in the USA.
